Can I still get hired?

"Why are you worried about tweezers when I could crash the plane?"

That is the quote that got him in trouble.

This story has nothing to do with you. (Already Hired)

Advice has been given...do with it what you will. Stop beating the dead horse.

Ok, look.... I've been living in the US since I was 4 and am a Resident Alien from Germany with a minor blemish on my criminal history. What happened on the day in question is this: I was given a Saturday detention for being late to class, when in fact I was trying to get a reprieve for one I'd previous received, so that I could take my SATs that Saturday. I unintentionally uttered those words, and before I know it....., I was sent to the office and told I'd be arrested. I mean geez, I wasn't going to shoot anyone up, and I dont even have a history of being aggressive or anything. I'm actually a rather docile guy, when you get to know me. I don't have mental issues anymore, as I've learned to overcome them through hard work and persistence. God, I say one retarded thing and now my potential career as a professional aviator is ruined forever?

Where's the compassion? Yes... I realize I fu&&&& up, and I'm very remorseful for what I said. But isn't there anyway I can "redeem" myself? I'm just an honest guy trying to make it in this world.:banghead:
Chief, i'm sure you're a great guy and god knows you wish you could take it all back. The fact remains however you have a record and others do not. So, your app will go to the bottom of the stack at every reputable shop in the industry. Airlines aren't looking for pilots, your ratings speak to that, they are looking for people. Are they going to want to take a chance based on your sob story, probably not. I think your only hope IF you can get a medical and IF you can get all your ratings would be some 135 freight or bush flying.

I unintentionally uttered those words, and before I know it....., I was sent to the office and told I'd be arrested.:

That fact that you didn't realize what you said until you said until you said it (or that's how I'm reading it) really bothers me. That seems to make it worse than just a joke IMHO

Capt. Caucasian, you former drumline fool.

You've gone and interjected with first hand experience and knowledge on a heavy-on-emotion/light-on-reality internet thread.

OMG. Do you realize what you've just done?! :) We'll call you "Dickey", set you up with a nice suburban hot dog stand in the desert so you can avoid any repercussions. Wait, that doesn't really work... Witness protection program foiled again!

Oh dangit, you're right! I forgot I was only supposed to post speculation, rumor, and innuendo.

Again, unintentional or not, you crossed a line that the vast majority of people would never cross. I believe in rehabilitation, but even so, there are still consequences to your actions.

You have been given a lot of opinions over the past 8 pages, and i'm not trying to be mean by giving you mine. I just want to give you the truth in how I see this situation.

As a corporate pilot, if I knew you had made these threats and were convicted for them, I would not allow you boarding as a passenger, let alone being anywhere near the cockpit.

Go find an aviation attorney!

To the original poster -

My $.02 (and its probably not even worth that) is go find a good attorney who specializes in aviation (could find a list in AOPA) and find out what you must report on medical applications/etc. and find out exactly what would come back on the background checks. She/he will probably have the most accurate opinion if you can get through the background checks and airmen medical, and if you have a chance at becoming a professional pilot. As for hiring boards/etc. - that's way down the road, and you need to know what is going to come back to the companies with the background checks.

Another thing - why on earth are you posting so much personal information about yourself on a public internet site?<O:p</O:p

I'm sure you're a great guy, I'm sure you're sorry, but let me give you a play-by-play of what I'm reading:

Ok, look.... I've been living in the US since I was 4 and am a Resident Alien from Germany with a minor blemish on my criminal history.

Ok...

What happened on the day in question is this: I was given a Saturday detention for being late to class, when in fact I was trying to get a reprieve for one I'd previous received,

What was the incident that caused the first detention? What did you do?

... so that I could take my SATs that Saturday. I unintentionally uttered those words, and before I know it.....,

If you were trying to get a reprieve for the first detention, I probably would have concentrated on being remorseful and kept the sarcastic comments to myself because I was the one asking for reconsideration. Bad judgement.

I was sent to the office and told I'd be arrested. I mean geez, I wasn't going to shoot anyone up, and I dont even have a history of being aggressive or anything.

In light of a few high profile school shootings, if I had a kid in school that made a threat of a school shooting and he wasn't restrained, I'd be asking for the heads of the principal, superintendent and the person who heard the threat and chose to do nothing about it.

I'm actually a rather docile guy, when you get to know me.

People often don't have the opportunity to get to know you beyond what's on paper. If you apply for a credit card, they're going to pull your credit history to form a picture of if you're going to pay them back or not. If you apply for a job, they're going to look at your background history to see if you're going to come to work rather than sit in the foreman's office explaining why you haven't performed.

I don't have mental issues anymore, as I've learned to overcome them through hard work and persistence.

That's an issue you've got to work out between you and the AME. As long as bipolar/depression diagnosis is part of your medical record, it's a disqualifying condition. Could maybe work with an AME for a special issuance or get re-evaluated. I don't know, I'm just a pilot. But talk to an AME, we've got one on staff here! ;)

God, I say one retarded thing and now my potential career as a professional aviator is ruined forever?

In the post-Colombine, post-Jonesboro, post-9/11 world where the TSA, DHLS and FAA run the show, I'm afraid so.

Where's the compassion? Yes... I realize I fu&&&& up, and I'm very remorseful for what I said. But isn't there anyway I can "redeem" myself? I'm just an honest guy trying to make it in this world.:banghead:

I think the compassion is that you're not sitting in jail today. Keep your nose clean, become a model citizen and you never know what the future may bring.

Speaking of the Jonesboro shooting, One of the guys got busted for dope a month or so ago and is going away for a pretty long time. And not to say that this is justice for what they did, At least he will have a little while to think about what they did to all those people and their families.

Oh dangit, you're right! I forgot I was only supposed to post speculation, rumor, and innuendo.

Hellloooo? You forgot about conjecture! Definitely need to post conjecture as well. :sarcasm:

I say good luck to the OP; however, I don't think you've got much of a chance in the 121 world. You asked a question...internets-type answers have been provided. These lead to a defined route you can take to get the OFFICIAL answers you seek. I suggest you start following some of the advice and start w/ the medical certificate/ criminal background checks.....then, go from there.

Why wasn't he already behind bars? What happened with those guys?

Because Arkansas had a law that said that you can't be jailed through your adulthood, for crimes committed in your youth.

Hmmmm... shake of the head on this:

Mitchell Johnson was arrested on January 1, 2007 while riding in a van with his roommate, Justin Trammell, who was convicted in Benton County, Arkansas, for killing his father in 1999 with a crossbow. Trammell was the first youth in Arkansas convicted under the Extended Juvenile Adjudication Act. The law allows for combined juvenile and adult sentences upon conviction of those younger than 18. It was passed in response to the Jonesboro school shootings. Johnson was arrested on misdemeanor charges of possessing a controlled substance (marijuana) and carrying a prohibited weapon (a loaded 9mm pistol).

Seems strangely coincidental that his roommate just happened to be the first one punished under a change in the law that waas his doing. And the fact that he has a loaded 9 mm pistol just winging it in a van doesn't say good things either...

I read that site and it said a felony involving a threat within the last 10 years. Therefore I'd still be good since my charge was only a misdemeanor.

Go for your goal, but as many people have said, chances aren't looking in your favor.

And sorry, but "my charge was only a misdemeanor" means diddly squat. When they ask you about it, "only" threatening to shoot up the school isn't quite as childish and excusable as say, mailbox baseball or egging a house. But ignore my words, "only" wanting to shoot up your school is just a misdemeanor, no biggy, you'll be #1 on the applicant to-interview-list.

You're not going to convince anyone here you are hireable. It's impossible to do that, no matter what the conviction is. If by some miracle this is all untrue you might have a shot.

Stop trying to convince us that it isn't a big deal (I'm not even going to go there....) and just accept the advice given. You need to get a medical (1st class), and get a background check done on yourself.

JetCareers (forgive me dough for assuming the role of the site) isn't a medical office, or a background checking agency, or an airline hiring board (directly).

JC can't get you a first class medical. Only you can get you a first class medical by going to an AME.

JC can't do a background check on you (I really wouldn't want to either).

JC can't turn you down for an interview because of your past.

Therefore this is the wrong place to write "but....but... it was only..."

No one on here wants to see you fail, despite all the face palming and "banghead" pictures that might make you think so. I've seen some pretty solid advice in the thread and you need to take it and run with it.
