Delta Airlines BeginningsScott Airport - Tallulah, Louisiana

Home of Delta Airlines?

Delta.Airline.Jet.jpg
Folks around here claim that Delta Airlines got its early beginnings as the home of an agricultural experiment station which first used airplanes to control cotton pests.

Built in the late 1920's by Standard Oil Company, the building housed a US Experimental Station in the early 20's that began flying mail for the US Post Office, and soon started a flying service which evolved into Delta Airlines.

Madison Parish considers itself the home of Delta Airlines, and the original airport building, Scott's Field, still stands near Tallulah, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Buildings.

Delta should put a pelican on the plane, or maybe a crawfish! ;)
That sign is no longer up. Delta actually began in Macon, GA as Huff Daland Dusters and then moved to Monroe, not Tallulah, LA. The Army Air Corps operated three aircraft out of Tallulah flying Airmail routes.

For Subair send me a PM on the details. I might go for that place er someday. I have no issues leaving KOMA to do a KHSI/KGRI stint if pay and QOL is right. Especially if I have to do a KHSI or KGRI run!

Suburban Air lost those when AMF underbid them. Being a Nebraskan and an Omaha-transplant, it was also my plan to work for subair after college. I even applied with 99 time, but having AMF-stank Jay just kind of blankly looked at me as I talked about my resume.

BUT you may be interested in knowing that a GP 99 has made it's way back home to nebraska and is still flying those airports, but now with boxes.

Go. Big. Red.

Oh cool with Sub Air I assume? And are they doing HSI runs?

Here's Derg's favorite throwback!;)

"Bluto" and I chugged an engine in that thing in FLL back in 1999 around Christmas.

And "Bluto" as in "Animal House" not "Popeye".

I still remember it was the last leg from FLL to MCO and I just "disappeared". He and the rest of the crew got re-routed to DH from FLL to ATL to JFK, ground DH to ISP to fly ISP to MCO.

Meanwhile, I was already back in California enjoying some turkey and stuffing.

Who cares about Delta signs.....:)

This sign is still up.......and is a classic.

My grandmother used to work there after she was laid of from the Shuttle program at Rockwell. Still love to drive by and reminisce about the days when the MD-80 and 90's were rolled out and either were waiting for paint or were just freshly painted.

They built DC 3's, 8's, 9's, 10's, MD 11's, 80's, 90's, 717's, C-47's, A-20's, A-26's, C-74's, C-124's, C-124's, A-4D's, KC-10's, C-133's and the early C-17's there. Close to 16 thousand planes. The maiden flight of the DC-8 took off from there.

A huge OC developer group purchased the land and buildings last year and they want to build offices, some sort of shopping complex and some kind of industrial complex like warehouses and some industrial parks I think and maybe even some manufacturing or some sort. They also bought all of what used to be known as the Douglas park area of buildings and land. In the agreement though with Boeing, Boeing stipulated that the sign has to be preserved intact and displayed somewhere, even if it has to be relocated. I would imagine at some point the hangars will be leveled sadly. A preservation group also got involved and have been working with the city and Boeing to get the sign historical status and make it a landmark. It was build in 1956. They were still having tours of the facilities (hangars, plants, paint ,testing etc.) through late last year. (not sure if they still do)

That sign is a huge icon of aviation history.

@A Life Aloft sadly some of the original hangars have been torn down years ago. The whole east side is much different than I remember as a kid.
Yeah some of them have and there is a lot of vacant land in some of the areas. It's going to be awful when the remaining ones go. Fantastic Burgers on Cherry right by one corner of the property still has some of the old stickers and pictures that Boeing employees gave them. Kinda sad. It's like a little ghost town over in that area as far as the buildings even though some of them are still there. There's been some sort of crews working on there digging up something and some trucks and other equipment. Have no idea what's going on. They were working on some sort of (what it looked like to me) easement or access and some electric stuff just a couple of weeks ago from the side street there and also behind the car rental place.

I don't know when the developer plans on doing what and where either. I also can't imagine there are enough businesses/entities to rent out space in the two Douglas buildings over on Lakewood blvd. with the sky bridge between them. The Irvine investment group has almost 10 acres to play with and they are trying to buy the land just south of Douglas park. wth? It seems to me, like a lot of property and huge risk with enormous amounts of monies being tied up for a damn long time in this economy.

Boeing did still have the 717 hangar up for sale though and I don't know what's up with it or even if it sold. Mercedes has leased a large part of the former 717 Boeing facilities over on Conant already from the Irvine group but they haven't said that I am aware of, what they are going to be doing there. Warehousing and offices???? No idea. Maybe bringing in shipments from the port over there or something for storage and prep work. Just no idea yet.

It just beaks my heart to see all this going on. So much history. Ugh.

The only good news is that the new terminal and the restaurants are banging great! Now if they would only finish up some other crap and move all the fricking cranes from all over the damn place!

When I was there driving around, there were a bunch of Boeing workers on strike out front. Was going to pull up to them and ask which way HR was located there, and could they kindly point me to it......... :D

You are an evil man. lol Was that the C-17 walkout a few years ago? It only lasted I think a month or less than a month.

What was wonderful though, was every time one was rolled out, they would do a couple of low fly bys, steep climbs and wing waggles and all the Boeing employees would be standing outside waving little American flags and cheering. Love those beasts. sigh again.
