Thank you for continuing to hold. Your face will be eaten (and scanned, I guess?) shortly.

this may be an unpopular opinion, but no one is going to blow up an airplane with a baggie of pills. Even worse the times they’ve detained people for having too much cash. If ATF or whoever is responsible for drugs wants to screen airports, they can do it from their budget and leave the security folks out of it.

That's almost not a bad idea, make it two step. The new KCM run by TSA verifies you're a crewmember and advance through, but if randomed step aside and let whoever (ATF or local LEO) perform the secondary screening. Oh and enforce some of the high fines we keep being threatened with, because that'll deter people from "brought the range bag to work by mistake".

Whereupon it no longer is an “administrative” search?

Pass. I’ll be in the Pre-Check line.

What I fear is too many crew members skip KCM and head over to Pre-Check, the program's participation drops down enough for the alphabet organizations involved say it isn't utilized and can any sort of program, all while patting themselves on the back for finding another line item to cut.
Pistol Pete and Semi-Auto Sally keep "forgetting" and bringing prohibited items through, so the program keeps changing. Plus, humans are going to figure out whatever the system is and try to exploit it to their benefit.

Or keep the program as is, and revoke privileges, enforce the penalties, etc.

There are range bags, and there are flight bags.

Their uses should never be mixed.

Nope. Entirely separate. TSA’s purview should be Transportation Safety. If the drug cops want to screen the airports, they can do it as their own program and coordinate with TSA how that’s going to work.
