Best IFR Hood

A lot of you guys might already know about this, but I recently got one and wanted to share it because I think it's a great find.

Like many I've tried just about every hood on the market and I think they all pretty much suck. I gave up and just started making my own foggles from $5 safety glasses by taping off an area and then spray painting the rest. They work OK but are just as uncomfortable and disruptive as the commercial ones.

So I ordered "The Best IFR Hood" which is a thick paper and elastic hood for $5.

It's light weight so you dont even feel it, very easy on and off, just throw elastic over head, and honestly has the best view blocking of any hood I've used including the big plastic hoods. Best thing is it folds up to the size of an envelope so you can always have a hood in your kit without being bulky and in the way.

I'm sure you could make one yourself if you had some card stock and elastic, but for $5 (shipping included) its cheap and easy. Sometimes the simplest solution really is the best. http://www.billweder.com/hood/

I ordered mine, Bill emailed me and said he was out of town for two days, he had it in the mail when he got back and I had it the next day.

JeppShades are the best I have used so far. They really do block out everything but the panel, unlike normal "foggles." I like how they flip up, so instead of having to give the controls to an SP or instructor, you reduce the need for exchange of controls. Pretty comfortable to.

The Jepp shades are OK, I like them much better than Foggles or modified safety glasses.... but dont work with glasses/sunglasses. The flip up hinge thing also can break pretty easily.

The paper hood works with or without glasses and since it folds up flat, there's nothing to break.

Why do you need to wear sunglasses under the hood?

Shoot an approach to the west in the late afternoon/early evening and pull the hood off and try to transition to visual without them.

When I "break out" and hand the controls over, one hand is removing the foggles, the other is getting my sunglasses.

$3 safety goggles and a sand blaster, tape off the area you want and then have at it. Works great

I've used the sectional under the headset before on students. The old Jiffy hood usually does the trick without any trouble for the primary students as they aren't under that long. This best ifr hood looks just the thing I'd need though as the students always seem to"forget"the hood! Thanks for posting this.

Baseball cap has always worked for me. Or just wait for it to be IMC. Otherwise, the Jepp ones are small enough that I'm likely to have them handy.
