I never knew that James Stewart was such an accomplished aviator...guy flew B-36's, B-47's and B-52s'...Great actor, but to say you've flown those types of planes...colour me damned impressed!

And it only lasted for 10 years, replaced by the FB-111A. Cool plane to see at Pima.......just screams speed.

One of the coolest, but not very forgiving. I seem to recall that 9 out of 30 development aircraft were lost, as well as something like 10% of the operational fleet. Not the best safety record for a SAC bomber.

I saw the Bendix trophy winning Hustler at the Museum of the Air Force last year. It boggles my mind that airplanes from this era were engineered without computers.

Flew with a B727 Capt very early in my career at UPS who flew the Hustler (Bill Hale..RIP). Had a lot of good stories and pics. He even had to eject out of one right after takeoff and had pics of that too. Very cool guy and airplane! Those guys had "The Right Stuff".

How does the nose gear retract with that giant ass tank positioned six inches behind it?

That "tank" is the weapons pod (an external bomb bay), and the gear goes around it and up into the fuselage.

Sure, 30 years later. How fast were they going 30 years before the B-58. It's the technology leap from 1932 to 1962 that's amazing, not the one from 1962 to 1990.
