Atkins Diet

Aloft, after slugging it out in the Squawk Box on issues political, how nice to see we're squarely on the same side on this one ... excellent!

The Food Pyramid is a crock.

FL270

Do you really think its money motivated, though?

I mean come on, really. I think its erroneous, but it just an extension of the four food groups concept. The food groups still encouraged you to eat a high carb low fat diet.

While I think its wrong, I feel its just a bunch of people with nutrition degrees decided was the right answer based on misguided logic, if fat is bad, eat less fat and you'll not gain weight. They totally disregarded the fact that your body can't take a molecule of ingested fat and store it directly. It first has to break it down into simple sugars. Which is why high blood sugar results in fat gain, that's what your body uses to make fat.

Anyway, I don't think it was a money or politically inspired conspiracy, just some misguided souls who didn't know any better.

But I can't PROVE it!

It was motivated by a lot of things really; economic stability, welfare for farmers, the food industry lobby to name a few. Nutrition, however, was a ways down the list. (great Scientific American article on the flaws of the Food Pyramid) Remember the original FarmAid concerts? (Now an annual event, interestingly.) We were asked to help farmers with donations, and via the Food Pyramid the government did its share. Agriculture is a huge part of the national economy, and back when the first FarmAid gig was thrown, things weren't looking so hot for farmers. American agriculture touches way too many areas of our economy to let it fall victim to market forces, and agricultural protectionism was the result. It's the reason we here in Kahleefohneeyah pay $3.85 for a gallon of milk (yes, $3.85 for a single gallon). Get the agriculture lobby and the food manufacturing lobby in the same room and and I believe it's the reason the FDA was likely "encouraged" to revisit its dietary guidelines.

But Wonder Bread and Mac 'n Cheese and Rice-a-roni are what the government says you should eat! In large quantities!

Bread, rice, cereal, and pasta doesn't have to mean mac and cheese, rice a roni, and wonder bread. You've got whole wheat bread. You've got shredded wheat cereal. You've got oh, my God, real rice that you actually have to cook yourself instead of putting it in the nuker.

Seriously, if we ate the whole grain stuff instead of the processed crap -- much of which has lots of sugar in it which gooses the calorie content of it -- we could do the food pyramid and be okay.

Want proof? Go to any Asian country, and the staple of the diet there is something that's all carbs -- rice. But they don't have the problems with obesity that we do. Japan and Korea have obesity rates of 3.2 percent, while the US has one of over 30. That tells me that carbs aren't the problem that Atkins makes it out to be.

That's exactly what the Scientific American article I linked to says!

I think the "right" solution is different for everyone. I don't do well with restrictive diets. Other people (as evidenced above) do great.

For me weight watchers has been very successful (no meetings -- you can do it all online now). I lost some weight and I've been able to keep it off, all while occasionally pigging out on ice cream, french fries, pizza, whatever. Key word being "occasionally."

You just keep on doing what you're doing. You looked just fine and that was after a weekend of drinking way too much alcohol and eating way too much food at various buffets!

Yeah, that article highlighted the problem. They tried to make it too simple and easy. So they distilled the message down to a simple fat bad message.

By doing that, people said, oh, it's fat free, I can eat as much of it as I want. Wrong. Especially when the fat free stuff had all sorts of sugar and so on added to it!

The bottom line is simple. Take in more calories than you burn off and you will gain weight. Eat less calories than you burn off and you will lose it. It doesn't matter if the calories come from carbs, protein, or fat.

Well until there is low carb Natural Light, I will not be doing the Atkins thing. That Ultra stuff is gross and expensive.

My current diet involves trying to eat like a normal human instead of like Jaba the Hut and exercising for my beer allowance. I have to burn 110 calories per beer. Late night on the town = long day of gym, jogging, and hockey.

Great motivation for both exercising more and drinking less depending on your mood...

That's good advice.

Where do you do your skating? Who knows, maybe I've seen you at the rink and may have even skated against you a time or two.

I believe in the 90/10 rule of dieting. That is that if you watch what you eat 90 percent of the time, you can let yourself go 10 percent of the time and you'll be just fine!

Ah, Atkins. For some insane reason, I did the Atkins thing when I was 24 and playing 5-7 full-length soccer games per week. I lost 10 pounds in 13 days. At 6'0" and 175 lbs., I didn't need to lose the weight. Putting the weight back on was one of the best food experiences I've ever had. Out of bed.

Well I just read this whole thread while eating a TGIFriday's bacon cheeseburger and fries, about 2 hours after eating a bowl of pasta. I now feel like I've sinned.

My problem is that I don't like to diet or excercise (yep, i'm the typical lazy [explicative deleted])...when I try to change my "lifestyle", it gets old fast and then you end up gaining the weight right back on.... I believe in the moderation, lots-o-water and green things (veggies).. but after a while, drinking 10 glasses of water a day (which by the way is actually really easy to do) gets old.. and eating veggies gets old.. and before you know it - your back to eating way too much thai or tofu stir fry with rice...I like the weightwatchers thing cuz like AW said - you can do it online and i get some great recipes that way... but i'm a really crappy cooker - which is why doug's the cook in the family... so now, i feel like i'm stuck cuz I'm the person that has been told that I have a thyroid problem (created by doctors for an extra $20 per month? you tell me! haha), the weight never seems to come off no matter how hard i seem to try, i'm bored with food and veggies and drinking too much water and i hate to excercise... where do you go from there???

I'm the type of person that wants to see quick results - in like a week, no more than 2 and unfortunately, it just doesn't work that way...so again, i feel stuck in a me, i don't like most of the time...

so i'm looking at upping my excercise more or just doing some (don't laff doug.. hahaha) since we're getting our excercise room slowly completed cuz i've noticed that no matter how much you change the consumption of food, the type of food or whether you drink 6 or 10 glasses of water a day - it doesn't matter unless you excercise it off....I have a hard enough time excerising just because i have so many other projects that i'm trying to get done (I usually end up putting more on my plate than i need)...so - I'm still working on talking to myself and telling myself "Kristie LOOOOOVVEESSS Exercise" (said in true jim carrey? fashion)..hahahaha
grin.gif
After 34 something years of living with myself - I've learned a lot and am still waiting to implement what i've learned and have it actually work for a change....what a learning process though!!

it doesn't matter unless you excercise it off

[/ QUOTE ] Well maybe this will help and maybe it won't. Like I said, I don't exercise other then chasing the kid. I switched my milk, sour cream, cottage cheese, cream cheese, salad dressing, potato chips, mayo, croutons, etc. etc etc to fat free, low fat, sugar free, low sugar, everywhere possible. Most of the stuff taste just as good as the fatty or sugary stuff, but it significantly reduces the amount of fat and sugar. And it seems to be working for me so....maybe it's worth a try for you? Get exercise by um, bedroom sports, dancing around the house like a crazy woman, and chasing some neices or nephews if you have any. Lots funner then walking on a treadmill. You can add cherries or lemon or cucumbers or strawberries to your boring water if you want. And whatever your very favorite thing to eat is, limit yourself to one serving a week. Almost all recipes have a reduced fat or low fat version, ask Doug to help you out by cooking lighter (in exchange for said bedroom sports). Do things like dip your bread in light olive oil instead of using butter, and use yogurt as a fruit dip instead of caramel, etc. HTH, if not oh well, you are a great person anyway and I know your frustration of not loving how you look, but I think you are beautiful any way.

PS, I know it sucks to be patient, some weeks I lose nothing, mostly it's a pound, but I have lost up to four in one week. Oh, also, the weeks that I have lost four have been when I have breakfast, then a snack two and a half hours later, then I have a dinner sized lunch, another snack 2.5 hours later, and then a light dinner, and one more snacl 2.5 hours later. It is hard to stick to that schedule when you are running around and such, but when I do, that is when I see the most results. When I have my big meal at lunch instead of dinner, I do so much better because after dinner I usually sit on my buns and don't move around much.

Atkins schmatkins.......some people just need to run. If you can't run then swim if you can't swim do an exercise routine in shallow water. I am a big advocate on exercise (not because I run track). This is just another gimmick, so people can feel they are healthy just because they eat a certain way.
Some may say I get kinda harsh with folks, but hey, I'm not trying to sugar coat anything that is needed. The general way of thought is to not take responsibilty by blame shifting. I gotta forget what the cause is for this Atkins thing, I just need to run LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Haven't tried it but just about everything I've read or heard about it has been positive. I did hear you will experience a massive increase in calcium loss while on Atkins. Some seem to think this will lead to osteoporosis later in life if you stay on the diet for an extended period of time. It does seem crazy but the numbers don't lie. People on Atkins see lower LDL levels and higher HDLs levels.

I lost all the weight I put on in college (17 lbs) in 4-5 weeks. I'm back to 6'1" and 178lbs by using one simple equation: BURN MORE CALORIES THAN YOU TAKE IN. I lowered my intake to 1,000/day and increased my burn to 3-4,000/day 3 days a week. Resting heart rate was back into the 50's and BP was around 100/60. Make a point of increasing muscle mass. 1 pound of fat burns 3-4 calories/hour; 1 pound of muscle burns around 50 calories/hour.

Some people eat a spoon full of sugar and balloon to Jiminy Glick proportions. Others are on diets to increase weight by way of pizza, beer and bratwursts. Lifes not fair.

Look. Why is it that with the tremendous amount of low fat and fat free foods available, society is fatter than ever. Why is it that though we have more knowledge than ever before, we are unhealthier than ever?

It seems everyone wants a magic "pill" or quick fix to cure obesity and unhealthy lifestyles. The trick is, there is NO easy way out!!!! Everyone wants some special diet to melt the fat. Hey, the only way to lose weight is to burn 3500 calories more than you intake. No two ways about that. This is only done by eating in moderation and by consistent excercise. This will boost the metabolism and cause you to lose weight. Don't let anyone fool you into some miracle diet, pill, or shake. There is no substitute for hard work and sweating it out everyday.

Just as in aviation. Sure you can go to some fancy flight school that has "guaranteed interviews" and such. Heck, you might even be a pilot with 1000 hrs, get an interview, and be a regional pilot. But remember, that easy path to the cockpit doesn't substitute for hard work and real life experience. When it comes down to it, physics and aerodynamics doesn't care you went to some fancy school that got you a job with low hours. Only the the pilot with the most experience will be the one to survive, should a problem occur during flight. In this manner, only hard work and dedication will pay off in the end.
