Asking for the jumpseat and other lost traditions

Is it tradition or their attempt to hold onto a nebulous concept of "captain's authority," where ever and how ever they can?
Captains authority is telling the gate agent you aren't releasing the brake until every last seat is full. OKing the movement of a pilot from the Jumpseat to nonrev status is just toolish, IMO.

At some airlines, that's a good way to get disciplined. If you're not at the last stop in your career, it's probably not worth trying to regain some "captains authority" over an issue that can result in a section 19 hearing.

Because he's a micromanaging arse. I flew a 3 day trip with the guy a week or 3 before and couldn't wait to be done. "I want you to do this now, I want you to do that now." He emailed me twice about a van time and left a note under the door as well. The first night he called me about the van time. I think my favorite part of this guy is that he seems to think that the non-revs care to be included in his FA brief (which he gives over the PA). He has every right to, but I also think it's odd that he flips on the PA listen button to ensure the FAs give the seatbelt instructions when he flips the sign on.

Sounds like JTrain has competition for the title of Captain McDoucheyPants.

i guess my question is in that scenario, if said person is not sitting in the physical jumpseat why do you care?

Some captains really really take that whole "but you are jumpseating" thing seriously. If you're in the back, as far as I'm concerned you're the same as a customer. Welcome aboard. You don't need to grovel to pay homage to El Capitan for agreements that are negotiated between companies.

Ask for a ride if you're gonna be bumping my elbow with your knee every 5 minutes. Otherwise go sit down.

How many of the folks saying "don't ask for a ride if you have a seat in the back" can quote from company policy that this is how it is. I will forward this info to my jumpseat coordinator.

FWIW, SJI:

"When offered a cabin seat assignment via the Flow Back process, introduction to the captain is not required; however, as a matter of good protocol and etiquette, it is strongly encouraged. Additionally, an earnest attempt should be made to express gratitude to the flight crew at the completion of the flight if possible."

Just because you asked. I still say Hi, ask for the ride, and say "Thank You"...

Tomorrow's a new day isn't it?

Here ya go.
The Captain may authorize the use of all Flight Deck jumpseats, but only to authorized personnel. Non- CASS OAL personnel are excluded from riding in the Flight Deck jumpseat, but may ride in any available cabin seat. In addition, the Captain may authorize a qualified Flight Deck jumpseat rider to ride in an available main cabin seat and, in coordination with Flight Attendant #1, may authorize the use of a vacant additional cabin jumpseat for qualified personnel. The Captain has the authority to exclude any person from the Flight Deck in the interest of safety.Should a jumpseat rider physically occupy a cabin jumpseat, the Captain must be notified for approval and weight and balance purposes. The Captain’s approval is not required if a jumpseat rider is assigned a main cabin seat by the Gate Crewmember and is occupying the seat.• Note •The above guidance does not constrain the Captain from exercising Captain’s Authority and requiring jumpseat rider(s) with a cabin seat assignment to visit the Flight Deckduring the boarding process.

Notice the captain may require offline flow back to check in, but it is not mandatory. When I brief my FAs I say, "Offline jumpseaters sitting in the back don't have to come up front, but if they want to, let them."

Sorry for the formatting. PDFs don't copy well.
