Article on Delta's One yr CAs

They come with quirks such as glare-prone skylight panels called “eyebrow windows” that were common when pilots sometimes navigated by the stars.
Isn't it wonderful when a journalista with this stuff?

Anyway, as far as I understood, those windows where carried over from the DC-8 and were meant to be used for looking for traffic. DC-8s I'm sure had provisions for celestial navigation but would be further back in the cockpit.

The -9s we had, and we had a lot, never had anything like FMS. Two VORs, two DMEs, and an ADF. We didn't even have DME hold. Slant alpha all the way....

You're right. I was looking at a picture of the MD88s we had for a very short period of time.

I think you're thinking of the MD-90. I flew on one with a decent cockpit. MD-88 seemed like the old one. Maybe a DL pilot can correct me on this one.

I'll never forget my first jumpseat ride on a Delta 88. Long story short, the captain turns around about 20 minutes into the flight, sees the look on my face, looks down and says "oh sh|t....here" and flips out the pedals. Sweet, sweet blood flow back to my feet.

That is how I feel every minute of every day.
