AOPA outsourced my information to a 3rd party

I'm no longer a member of AOPA but I believe on the membership form there's something where you can tell them they cannot sell your information to any other companies.

If there isn't, there should be.

And nope, if I start flying again, I'm not interested in coughing up the money. Why?

For all their talk about how they'd protect private pilots, there's still an ADIZ around DC and the DC3 still are pretty much no fly.

Back when thye used to ask for a phone number whenever you used a credit card, I used to give them the number for the local CIA office.

I'm on a list somewhere for that, aren't I?

How do you know that money is wasted? Its not wasted money if the entire marketing effort ends up bringing in more revenue than it cost to produce. And I would suspect their marketing efforts bring in TONS more money than they cost to produce.


And FWIW, my experience has been like some others have reported. I've been a member for over 10 years. I get a magazine in the mail once a month. I get marketing material or some sort, either looking for donations or offering some other services, in the mailbox about two or three times a year. I get marketing phone calls exactly zero times a year.

By contrast I have a mortgage so I get junk mail from refi companies every week. We have a few accounts with a major bank in addition to a credit card and car loan with that same bank, so we get solicitation phone calls trying to get us to buy some other service at least once a week and tons of junk in the mailbox.

My wife got a speeding ticket last year. We still get junk from local attorneys in the mailbox every few days.

AOPA is an organization that like it or not, has done a lot of good for the aviation industry in this country and I'm quite happy to support them so I don't mind the little bit of marketing I get from them and I understand the reasons that they're more aggressive with marketing to pilots who are not members. I'm not sure how much good banks and lawyers have ever done for anyone besides themselves so I'm personally much more annoyed by the waste of paper and resources that they're marketing causes. But even still I understand why they do it.
 
I haven't renewed in 3 years. Last time I did renew I kept getting calls and mail from them about renewal. I called and politely asked them to stop and it seemed to get worse. I just called and cancelled and the stuff still shows up- even at my new address (which I don't know how they have). I was an aopa member when I flew GA, but I don't see a point anymore- especially when they can't even manage a mailing list.
 
I answer it because I am afraid the only time I don't answer, they will be trying to get me to come pick up my free "lets go flying" sr22.
 
Glad I don't have a home phone. Now Sportys on the other hand has been bombarding me with catalogs, I have probably been sent 10 catalogs in the last month. It's getting out of hand.
 
Step 1: "Please add me to your do not call list"
Step 2: Write down every future call
Step 3: Hire a lawyer and cash in, it's $500 per incident IIRC.
 
I get a lot of mail and calls from them as well. They offered me a membership for $19 so I took it. I don't really use them for anything but I like their ASF courses so I figure I'd help them out a little bit.

The drawing for the SR-22 is sometime at the end of this month, or maybe early February. Honestly, the Remos would be much better to win (much, much less taxes). Plus, you could put the Remos in a leaseback, and probably do decent with the deal. Good luck doing that with a SR-22
 
I would rather have the sr22. Remos looks a little cramped. I thought they were getting a skycatcher for next year? Maybe I was thinking of sportys. Good luck to those AOPA guys doing those long X-country flights to all of these meet and greets in that remos, might be one of the first flying gigs I would ever turn down.

Remos is way wider than a 172. Heck, it might even be wider than a 206. Sporty's is indeed doing a Cessna 162 for their contest. Of the two, the Remos is hands down a better airplane, from what I've seen.
