An Increasing Trend on Jetcareers . . .

Now, I'm no moderator, and I probably already talk more than I should, but I felt that I should do my part and speak about something that I'm noticing more and more . . .

Users that, instead of just answering a question for a newby (or a not-so newby . . .), they go through alot of trouble to prove to the newby that the topic has already been talked about. Sometimes to the point of doing a search, and posting mutiple URL's for the past threads.

Now, let's be real - not everybody knows how to do a forum search. Some of our users are lucky to be able to figure out how to log on to JC. In addition, in the time you spent convincing the new guy that (s)he is an idiot for not searching for the answer, you could have answered the stinking question!!

Jetcareers has been around for a long time, and with few exceptions, we've pretty much covered it all. So, should we just close all of the forums to new posts, and rename it the "Jetcareers FAQ"? I think not . . .

Sorry for my rant....has anyone else noticed this?

i got that "do a search" response today!

i can understand that us newbies could be a little agrravating with all of our questions, but everybody's got to learn somehow!

thank you to all of you experienced pilots who take the time to answer questions... this website has been the best resource i've found as a newbie pilot!

I agree....but also have to add that sometimes the search function can be a pain and bring up a ton of threads that are of no use. For example, if i wanted to search a topic about short field landings, a ton of threads will pop up just because the word landings. Then I would have to go from page to page to see if theres a specific thread that answers what im looking for. When instead, I could just start a new thread and ask the specific question. However, this only holds true for everything except PFT questions, in that case use the damn search function

You think all those crusty old professors at college know how to do that? Half of them can't even use the internet. The only thing I learned in college was that it was a waste of money and time.

Lloyd is right, this place can sometimes sound downright unfriendly to the new user who has just joined, and has a frequently asked question. Some topics like headsets have been beat to death, and others are frequently asked but may depend on current information. An example would be student loans, which is very volatile right now with Key Bank's recent policy changes.

I've been a member of this website since before I soloed, and am happy to be part of a great group of people who enjoy helping people reach their goals. There are members that are unwittingly turning some threads into an a.net clone, and I would urge those individuals to consider both their audience and their fellow company before posting.

I agree, I sent Doug a PM the other day (I hope he received it) about implementing some sort of respect rating... Like found on other message boards, or that *other* website's "Respected Users list"... So then you can dock people rep points (or whatever you want to call them, we could call them "Doug stars", I don't care) for doing things like saying "Search the forums"... and also to give newbies a hint on who knows what they're talking about

Good idea, I would be down with a Karma rating

Good post Lloyd, I will buy you a beer in vegas for the trouble!!

Imagine if CFI's just shrugged off simple questions a prospective pilot may have. I don't think anybody would be complaining about eating Ramen, the complaint would be at least getting some Ramen to eat LOL.

Yeah, man. Tired of hearing that one. Seems like once a quarter, that one flares up again.
