Ameriflight

Is it just me or is Ameriflight getting desperate? Like Seaport right before the bankruptcy desperate?

They have been desperate. UPS is the first legitimate airline that AMF has been able to append their name to in an agreement so far. This is similar to FlexJet announcing they will be the launch customer for the first supersonic private jet, it makes great headlines and generates lots of buzz, but if you peel the layers back and realize that UPS only hires 12 interns a year, and that is just one step in a very long list of hoops you have to jump through, the excitement will wear off for everyone.

Coming up on 1200 TT but only 10hrs multi. How realistic is going to a freight company like AMF and getting up to speed as a PIC on a multi turbine  With only about 85 IFR. I believe AMF is a single pilot operator. Any input appreciated.

Lnav. Very realistic. Play some microsoft flight sim to get current. Ameriflight would start you in the piston navajo and chieftains.

I would work for one of the other feeders personally. Amflight is usually the lowest pay. What part of the country you in?

I got hired onto ameriflight in the beech 99 with just over 1200 hours and about 35 multi. As long as you know basic IFR procedures you'll be fine. I came from doing survey work in a 172 and had no issues.

Great! Thanks for the replies. From the Austin area but willing to relocate anywhere. I'll have to dust off the Microsoft flight sim and get back up to speed. What other feeders would you recommend?

Im at Alpine Air. Best place Ive worked at so far. All turbine time with a fast upgrade to the 1900.

If you want to stay by Austin you can get on with Baron flying a Fedex caravan. They have an opening in San Antonio right now and Austin might open up at some point. http://baron-aviation.com/employment/

That said if you're comfortable with Alpine's bases that might be a good way to go. There are a few other companies like Bemidji which bought out another freight company recently. There's also http://www.subair.com/employment/ and several others to consider. If you don't mind flying a caravan Empire, Wiggins, Mountain Air Cargo and Baron all fly them and have some bases you might be interested in.

I've talked to more than a few ex-Ameriflight pilots and have known a few that spoke quite negatively of how they were treated by the company. I'm not sure things have improved enough for me to ever recommend them as a company. You might want to look into your quality of life as you should find a base where you can be around family as I'm not sure you'll have the easiest time getting holidays off or getting the time off to visit for more than a weekend. I don't know as much about freight as some of the guys here.

There are some companies flying the Shorts and looking for captains. AAC would hire captains at 60k + per diem if I remember right, but they just had a crash in WV that made me stop recommending people to them until more information came out. Still I think they've upped their pay package and with the right route could be worth shooting them an email. I believe there's a company that flies them out of Puerto Rico and the rest of the Caribbean that might be cool to work for.

Freight Runners is also worth checking out.

With 135 mins you could also fly for Boutique Air as I think they work a very livable 8/6 and have bases in Texas.

I see a posting for a 1900 Captain in LAN. I'm about 160 hours away from 1200, 170 multi, 30 turbine...any chances they hire me into that?

Nope, I was 50 hours away and they wouldn't hire me. I went through 3 interviews each time I successfully passed and was offered a class date. 1st time they wanted me to be SIC. Then they fired the entire recruiting staff and all hiring got put on hold. Met the chief pilot at a career fair who apologized and asked me to reapply. 2nd time new recruiter asked me to go back through the whole process, successful technical interview offered VFR capt and the recruiter quit the company. Third time, new recruit another technical interview and a class date after I hit 1200 but not before. I got tired of them and I went over to their competitor who hired me on the spot for better pay, better airplane and got assigned my home as a base.

Ameriflight is circling the drain. Can't hire anyone because their recruiting process sucks so bad. They still have no clue how to hire in this environment. They are hiring competitors to fly their routes now so they can keep their routes. This won't end well for them unless major changes happening.

I know we have covered runs for Ameriflight where I have worked. Bemidji covered runs for them in Texas and Alpine has been covering runs for them in SLC.

Sorry to hear that, not surprising at all though. The culture there has always been to do the bare minimum to get somebody on property, or to stay, and most of the time it isn't enough. Take this UPS gateway program announcement for instance. AMF announces it on the forums and social media outlets to get buzz, yet they have no particulars of the program or how to even apply. AMF has been doing stuff like that for decades, they put minimum effort into almost everything they do.

I've heard more on this from the UPS end but nothing worth expounding on. This is a program for UPS interns. It's a way to attract UPS interns and provide a possibility for interns to advance to UPS pilots. It's probable that UPS will expand their intern program as much as possible since now there is a pipeline from intern to UPS flight crew (via Amflight) that kids will find attractive.

Thinking about applying, strictly for SLC base. Is that a competitive base? 3000TT 750turbine, 1250xc. All pic. Only 60ME, did get my ATP though. Think I could get 1900 or metro in SLC?

Why not apply through Alpine aviation too as they've got SLC bases too they're advertising to increase your chances?

Ha. I have zero interest in the regional/major world. Currently at an excellent company flying float planes, seasonally, and can live ok without working in the winter. I'd like to fill to instrument/multi hole in my resume, and thought it would be a good way to knock that out for a winter.

Trust me when I say this, at AMF you will most definitely be working in the "winter." As a matter of fact its their busy season AKA "PEAK." Filling the gap for your resume sounds fine and all, but if you're just going for one winter then go into the 99, they may want a contract for the type rated airplanes. Apply and see, they're pretty desperate at this point.
