Amazon proposes Drone-only delivery airspace

If they're aiming for something completely automated, how many jobs is this initiative going to create?
It's not.

But, that is the all-purpose corporate cop-out for repealing or modifying (regulation we don't like). "ITLL CREATE JERBS! ALL HAIL THE CREATORS!"

The world is already capable of producing everything everyone needs without everyone working. The ownership/distribution is not balanced so some people do without. Still, we can make enough despite a chunk of the population at leisure.

Sure the definition of "need" changes over time. But our technology more than keeps up.

I think it is only a matter of time before we can satisfy most wants with almost no one working. Then what? Will work become simply a hobby interest (like gardening or airline pilot jobs for some)?

Two things will happen. Thieves will shoot down and steal whatever the drone is carrying and hackers will hack into the systems to intentionally crash drones.

Scenario 1, yes, I can totally see that. Scenario 2, only if you give them an avenue to do that. With the new 2.4ghz spread spectrum technology, I see that being difficult. And the most surefire way is eliminating the wireless programming all together. Just put a GPS tracker on it, and plug the thing in to tell it where you need it to go.

Great. Entirely autonomous and uncontrollable drones. I can't see how that might become a problem. :sarcasm:

Nah it'll be fine, GPS is so reliable!
Except when there's a solar flare, and the PDOP values get so high the position error causes dozens of these things to fly through short final at Newark.

The plus side is you could order more beer without risk of DUI :)

Postmates!

Wait, I wonder if that works for alcoholic beverages… probably not because then it'd put the onus on the delivery driver to ensure that you're of legal age.

At least you could use Uber. I love Uber.

Wait until Amazon buys Uber to use drivers for same day deliveries :)

Looks like someone decided to blast a $1800 one out of the air....

The article mentions "trespassing", gotta agree with that. When these things have not only cameras recording, but live view, loitering over someone's property at low altitude should absolutely be considered trespassing.

The problem is not with the drones. It's the fact that they are easy to operate, which allows morons to purchase and operate them as they please.

While I agree that it's trespassing, what about the supreme court case with the chicken farmer vs the USAF? I wonder if that will guide rules on who owns the airspace above their property. Because as it stands now, the owner does not to my knowledge.

Um. What?

Actually, 0 - 200ft means I won't ever have to pay for clay pigeons for skeet shooting any more.... :)

I don't really care what the drone is carrying, I just want to shoot it for the sake of smashing stuff.
I think that will be the main problem with the drones.

When I was growing up, we would take bb guns and just shoot birds along the fence or on the light poles. I can't imagine being a kid and seeing little helicopters flying around with gifts attached to them. It could be Christmas everyday.

My future children will be excellent marksmen, they'll be getting plenty of practice ;)

"Those whippersnapers in them new-fangled flyin' machines! Ain't no way 'amma letting them fly over MY house!"

It seems the more things change, the more they stay the same.

If @ATN_Pilot doesn't like Amazon having little drones, he's going to be even less happy with Facebook: http://money.cnn.com/2015/07/30/technology/facebook-drone-aquila/index.html?iid=hp-toplead-dom
