ALPA vote

While apathy is part of it, a large part is also not know the people who run, aside from a short bio/blurb they might send out.

I'll still classify that as apathy. If folks do not take the time, or make an effort, to become more well informed they are just as responsible for the poor outcome as those who seek to take advantage of such apathy.

Not sure how to become well informed about an FO LEC rep who has been with the company a few years. It's not like you can Google his/her positions on key issues.

I always put out position papers and even put up a web site when I was running for office.

That is great, and I've gotten papers or emails detailing positions from some of those who run for office.
While I won't vote for anyone who does not communicate (like it would get any better if they are elected), many of the stances are similar. Also, stuff on paper is great, but what really differentiates the good leaders and union reps are the people with good interpersonal skills. I'm sure you've seen it before. There might be people within ALPA who, if you went down the line, they agreed with you on everything. Yet they are abrasive and have horrible people skills making them poor reps. Yet there may be others who may only agree with you on 1/2 the issues, yet they know how to work with others and get things done.
Often I have no clue who the person is. Maybe I've flown with the guy as when he/she was an FO (for captain reps), but many times I have no clue who the person is. Yeah, we have a crew lounge, but as a commuter I'm rarely there. At a regional, are they doing it because they really want to help or are they doing it to get another block checked with the legacy carrier application? Got me.
I'm not bashing the system. Just that it is often not that easy to get to know the people running for office as one might think.
