The 747-8's likeliest sales are to the Pentagon. The Air Force is planning to upgrade the all-747 presidential aircraft fleet by 2023 and has also begun studying whether to replace the "Doomsday" fleet, four 747-200 jets hardened against nuclear blasts that provide a mobile military command, Charles Gulick, an Air Force spokesman, said in an email.

I read somewhere last week that the upper deck of the 747-800 is the length of a 737 fuselage. Wow. I also am astonished of what the cost of having 747's kept operation for such a scenario. Just wow.

Air Force One is a drop in the bucket when we are talking about federal budgets. We are the world superpower. Our president is going to have a super awesome jumbo jet to fly around in that does a lot more than we can even talk about here. Period.
Will the new transport be expensive? Yes. Is it worth it? Yes.

I still see a 747SP flying around every once in a while!
I go up to Offutt AFB every now and again. There are always E-4s on the ramp there. They are -200s as well. I think they are also considering replacing them.
