Air Force One To Retire with 747-800 Replacement by 2023

If history is any indicator, the Air Force will royally screw up the acquisition project, it will get gold plated, go way over budget and timeline, and then be too big to fail and so it will get funded anyway.

Not a ton, but still a few.

Bunch of -100/-200/-300 and even -400 being expedited to the scrapping line here where I am.
I watched a -400 being scrapped here in MWH. I think they trucked the aluminum across the street to the Budweiser plant ;)

According to our latest propaganda from our financial folks (publicly available) there are only about 20 747 Classic freighters running around (I think most of those are Connie's). Throw in a couple SPs running about (Casino, the Jesus jet in CAK and Iran Air), that's it except for gubment jets.

Those old junk 744s rolled off the line before a lot of the JC population was a gleam in Papa's eye. With the number of factory freighters, and inherent load limitations of converted jets, I don't think you'll see many pax jets converted.

I could be totally wrong, too.

Pratt & Whitney'e engine testbed 747SP was just here at MZJ a few weeks ago.

And the Iran AF stil enjoys their KC-747 tankers.

I have no problem with a modernized AF1 748. What I question is why it is necessary to have the White House Press Corps riding along. Let their respective employers foot the bill for their travel. I'm guessing they have some sort of reimbursement schedule but that's not dollar for dollar.

LOL if they think Boeing is going to keep the 747-8 line open for another 8 years (96 months) at the rate they're selling (I count 62 delivered+21 ordered).
I agree with you there. Not sure how this would pan out. Then again, this is the gub'ment.
