A330 Almost Takes Off From Newark Taxiway

Actually, while typing that, I had an epiphany…they moved the runway east a few years back, I bet the RAAS database still has the old location for the 26 threshold

Still not helpful! Or similarly getting an "on runway" alert taxiing out in OAK a couple years back nowhere near the runway. Allegedly they were using the taxiway for a time when there was runway construction going on that had loooonmg been completed.
 
Ahh. Gotcha. I wondered about that. Ever so faintly I hear “approaching runway 16R” and wondered what’s up with that? Normally it’s loud and clear on the ground in my headset. But in approach (and not all time) I hear approaching runway but it is faint. So it seems I have to have the cockpit speaker up in order to hear that on approach? Learned something new if true!

Not sure turning up the speaker volume would actually affect that, I'd have to look that up (and I'm actually currently bored enough I might go do it).

Edit: So I did. The approaching RW in the air alert is intended to be a visual message only, so the aural warning is a hiccup covered under the "NOTE: For messages that are visual only, a very low aural may sometimes be detected." Again, wonderful wonderful system...

I especially love when I can't hear anything the tower controller just said in ORD or OGG because the RAAS was screaming ONE...THOUSAND...FEET...REAMAINING at somewhere around 3,000 dB. Or the countless times I've gotten a false notification about a runway or taxiway. It is truly the most worthless safety system ever created. I would argue it is instead directly a threat to safety. Clearly dreamed up/designed by some moron who only ever flies a desk who needs to be drug out in the street, stabbed multiple times with a rusty screwdriver, and left to die.

Feels so good to get that out of the system. Noodle I hate RAAS.

The new whip has it and in JNU it calls “APPROACHING RUNWAY 26” when you’re lined up for takeoff and “ON RUNWAY 26” between the time you’re done setting takeoff power and the “airspeed alive” call

Our taxiway take off protection triggers at a super low airspeed/ground speed.

Nothing better than the speed creeping up on a long straight taxiway to get the super loud “On Taxiway, No Take off” call. All the pax hear it and think you’re about to kill them.

I’d rip it out if I could.

Some of our planes have a specific RAAS inhibit switch. If not for FOQA....

Haha were you flying into juneau that summer they did that? That was good times
 
Do the big boys make their own avionics or do they just throw in whatever box Honeywell makes?

Mostly they get an OEM to provide the avionics.

Airbus has a similar (but way simpler) system called ROROP which tells you to go around if it thinks the runway is too short, or to use max brakes/reverse if it thinks you aren't stopping fast enough.

After what appears to be a smooth landing the aircraft starts calling the flying pilot names. As soon as the nose wheel touches; Retard, Retard, Retard.

Can you write-up the plane on the suspicion that the EGPWS database is out of date? :D That would also affect obstacle look-ahead and the terrain clearance floor functions.

For a long time Honeywell was effectively the only vendor making a TAWS LRU via the Mk V and Mk VII/VIII. However Collins and Garmin are starting to chew into the fixed-wing market (rotorcraft is a whole basket of vendors). Garmin because that's just part of their integrated suite and most aircraft with a G1000/3000 don't have room for an extra LRU (Phenom 100). Collins is the vendor on the 787 also because they are an integrated avionics suite (ISS-2100). I want to say some newer business jets ... anything with a ProLine Fusion could (e.g., Global 6000).

(Embraer being Embraer thinks TAWS means "Traffic Awareness and Warning System" :rolleyes:)
 
The RAAS CBT was the most painful of all CBT's. I cannot understand how a system designed to simplify airport awareness could be made so complicated. We opted out of having it installed on my current plane and it is usually turned off on planes that do have it that I've flown.

I’d be concerned about the liability should there ever be an incident and resulting investigation such as a runway conflict. Not that I ever plan of having one, but I’ve had towers clear me across a runway at small fields which are currently occupied. LEB tower still owes my FO and I a beer. I imagine “crew intentionally disabled a safety device because it was annoying” wouldn’t age well.

That being said, I still hate it.
