Ok, here's the sitrep:

Just broke 800 TT today, so my times are now 800/25, and my current gig is ending in a few weeks. So now what? Suggestions? Advice? Job leads?

And don't say "go get your CFI tickets" because it's not worth the expense for a few hundred hours.

I want to stay out west preferably, though I'd take a job at Comair or ASA if one was offered.

come to alaska, someone will probably hire you with those times. You'll get paid better than the 'real world' and you'll probably have more fun. give it a shot! congrats.

CFI is worth it, as it may be the only job you can get. The regional job market has dried up. If you did get a regional job, you can expect to lose it within 6 months.

Or pack up the flight bag, find a good paying job to help pay the loans, and wait 5 years and see what happens.

I love these threads!!!

"I have EIGHT HUNDRED HOURS!!!! Where's the job I AM OWED!!! CFIing is BELOW me!!!"

How about this... suck up your pride, get your CFI and make way more money than you would at a regional or 135 job. Be home every night and have control over your schedule...

You know the options. But if I may comment, the worst thing you can do waiting for oil to drop and a recovery is not fly. So if you cant work out a non cfi gig, i wouldnt take a penny wise pound foolish approach, and not fly for a while- get the cfi.

i wish I had my CFI, it is always a good ticket to have.

Loans? What loans?!? Oh, you mean flight training loans...yeah, got none of those. Zero training debt here, baby! :nana2:

Keep the suggestions coming, and let's try to work on the signal:noise ratio please.

Here is a pretty simple summation of your options:

Get CFI's
Fly Traffic Watch/Pipeline
Apply to one of the 2-3 regionals that are hiring and potentially not have a job in 6 months

That is pretty much it. You don't have enough time to do anything else, really.

Then please tell me why not get your CFI then. 800/25 gets you pretty much squat right now.

800/25.. Wow.. just goes to show what happens when one assumes..

I didn't wanna CFI at all, but I had a blast doing it.. You may want to consider it..

I remember ~800 hours.. When I was at 800 hours it was just enough time to really kill yourself and not enough time to be useful to anyone.. I finally found a small Jetstream operator and got a job with them..

and have no health coverage benefits.

Not true.

A number of schools offer group health insurance. But of course they're not going to be located at your local airport (most of the time).

Nevertheless, I know that at least ONE of the schools have stopped hiring instructors with no previous instructing background as the turn over has obviously come to a screeching halt.

In a few months there might only be one or two regionals hiring, and hiring nobody but ex-121 pilots from other regionals.

The CFI certificates are what I'd do if I were you.

and have no health coverage benefits.

depending on where you work. My health benefits were fully covered by the place I instructed at (better than the benefits at the regional I'm at).........From what I hear, there are places offering 40K and up with full benefits for an instructor who says they'll stay for 2 years....something to think about.....

Aloft, you might want to re-think the CFI thing. It might not be worth it for 200 hours, but if we somehow revert back to the mid 90's, you might need 4000 hours and 500 multi for that regional job.....

With that being said, if you want a job without instructing, print up a bunch of resumes and hit every place you can. Your times are way too low to be insurable for a corporate gig, and you probably won't find many jobs that will let you fly enough to be worthwhile. I second the people who say go to Alaska or the ditch. Another option is flying jump planes for a skydiving outfit. Those are your best options right now. Good luck, and let us know what you end up doing.

if instructings that good of a gig, why dont you quit your regional and go back to instructing? you've certainly complained enough about being an airline pilot, why not do something else?

Sigh....the ignore function is useless if you guys keep quoting his posts!!!

Ford: where were YOU at 800 hrs, smart guy? Your first regional job, IIRC. So you have zero credibility on the subject. As usual.

Swing and a miss!!!

I said "make more money" not necessarily "advance your career" or "live the lifestyle you like to live"

And even the make more money is only if you go to a poorly-paying regional. At a better-paying one (note it's still not "good" paying), you may be able to make more as a second year FO.

It's called "looking long term" and it varies from each person.

For someone with 800/25 right now, CFIing is the best long term solution. For someone at a regional right now, it's a foolish move to make with the industry being volatile.

So tell me, what airline do you work for? I'm sure you don't even understand the points I make (because you see it as simply "complaining"). Come back to me if you ever get a shot at the regional lifestyle.

I don't see why he wouldn't have credibility. He gave some options that pay quite well; I earned more money as a CFI than I do at year two at a regional right now.

You are the one that said it would be a waste to instruct for just a few hundred hours. But that's assuming regional minimums don't go to 2000-3000TT. Would that change the CFI certificates decision at all?
