2022 Christmas meltdown Competition enteries

My lips are sealed when it comes to issues about antiquated IT issues at an airline.

I'll just sit here in the corner… silently. :)
"Here is a list of carriers that can only use the following 3 gates until further notice"

"Why?"

"Because SFO was still running Windows XP on all the gate computers and those airlines updated their res systems to need Windows 10 or better, so the airport installed Windows 10 at 3 gates for now while they shop around for a better deal for Windows since licenses are expensive".

(1 hour later)

"But A4 and A6 are both open and those are the gates our lounge can board from!"

"Yeah, but A4 and A6 are still running Windows XP".

Meanwhile, planes sit out there burning thousands of dollars per hour in fuel and crew costs waiting for a gate….. nobody cares as long as there’s someone else to blame….

Poor Americans. Zero understanding of how doctors spend their money. Newsflash, doctors are some of the stingiest groups of people you’ll come across. ABSOLUTELY they fly Spirit.

When I was working in market research for a healthcare IT firm I designed a survey for doctors using a $5 Amazon gift card as an incentive. My bosses joked that I was wasting my time, as no doctor would give up 10-minutes for such a low reward. We hit the survey response quota within 24-hours.

As long as they aren’t trying to travel now…I bet SWA is going to come out with some really low fares soon to try to retain customers.

My family lives in an eastern suburb of Dallas, so they're big DAL/WN fans. My mom was actually flying DEN-DAL yesterday and managed to get out, albeit a bit delayed.

Although she was visiting my brother in Broomfield, where JSX provides super convenient service into their airport from DAL, so I told her to look at that in the future as well.

Charter is equally stressed during this time. There are no “spares” per se as everyone is maxed out with travelers to Aspen, Cabo, Bozeman, St. Martin, etc. In the statistically unlikely event of an AOG (they’re machines after all) it’ll take days before someone has vacancy in the industry.
Unlikely! I flew Citation X’s at my last charter gig and we were running in excess of 80% AOG daily on that pile of garbage:bounce:

Not hard:

1. Perpetually understaffed airline that is always reliant upon employees picking up voluntary overtime
2. Pissed off employee groups due to change in CULTure and protracted contract negotiations
3. Point-to-point route network
4. Bad weather

My neighbor is like 25 or 26. He's a ramper at Sky Harbor for SWA. He told me that they're either asked, expected or mandoed into working OT almost every shift. He said its not uncommon for him to work a 16-18 hr. shift. He said if something happens in the system, like canceled, repo'd or late flights. Expect possibly a 24 hr. shift. He said its not too uncommon for him or others just to sleep in the breakroom. Because its just easier than going back home, after working all that, because they're still expected to report for their scheduled shift time the next day, if not given accomadation.

He says starting pay is $15 an hr in PHX. But with all his OT. he easily makes almost six figures. He says that he's kind of trapped (golden handcuffs) because with OT he makes really good money. But he finds himself seriously stressed the "f" out a lot. Tired and it's putting a serious strain on his relationship with his gf cause he's never home. He says he can't always make plans because he doesn't know what his schedule will be. He says both his days off and vacations have been canceled before due to staffing. He says he seriously thinks about quitting at least several times a week. But that he can't afford it.

And then you reach your 30s, and staying that in-shape may not work out for everyone. College hangovers suddenly start to last two days. And then it just starts adding up, because the money may be great but QOL is in shambles. It ain't for everyone, especially with whatever cost of living has gone up to in Arizona. I honestly don't know how some folks, like teachers or nurses, manage to do it. Iunno. I'm watching Friday's list of CXLs rack up and just keeping quiet.

I miss the ramp being fun.

A friend of mine (former co-worker) that works ground for AA here in PHX, suggested that I jump over to ground crew which starts at $17-18. My neighbor has in the past also suggested working ground for WN. Since I'm always complaining about psych, lol. I turned them both down due to the unpredictable and long schedules/mando OT, but also working the tarmac in the summer. When it's 110 degrees, I don't even want to know what temp it is on the tarmac. Nope!

Nurses actually make decent money, at least here on the west coast. I've heard in the south they might make like $18 an hour. Wow! Psych is a specialty and some of my nurses are making $50-60 an hr. With bonuses for picking up OT. ranging in the amount of $500 for each shift, plus OT. They're really making out, probably $90-95k. And if they have a PRN job on the side they're easily clocking six figures. Like $110-120k, with only an associates degree or a BSN. Not too bad!

My non-aviation (and super-frequently traveling) brother in law figured out after flying JSX (and absolutely loving it) that I fly the same airplane at my Regional. He's making a case that Tara and I should move back to Dallas and I go to work for them.

Given the number of day trips from DAL, it's compelling, but the pay isn't quite there yet....

Most large organizations are like this until they get disrupted by a smaller and more nimble company or have events such as this. Unfortunately it takes years and actual support from senior leadership, which can be difficult given their age and many of them being bad at tech themselves. True story, years ago several of us were trying to convince leadership to invest millions into a digital transformation to keep from getting disrupted by a startup when the main person responsible for the answer still had a flip phone. The iPhone 4/5 was out by this point.

"If you've already left, take care of yourself, do what you need to do for your family, keep your receipts," McVay relayed. "We will make sure they are taken care of, that is not a question."

my son has a mdw connection to msp on friday and there has been nothing out of mdw to minny for a few days on SWA. If they can't get a 'hub' cleaned out I cant imagine what the outlying airports are like.

trying to figure out if we cancel is there a reimbursement or do we have to wait until that day. theyve already canceled tomorrows flight so it does not bode well
