CALL US ABOUT OUR ON THE JOB TIME BULDING PROGRAM / Frequently Asked Questions Regarding Traffic Watch Flying
Q. What is Traffic Watch? What is the job like?
These flights are operated by EeAir, LLC. We operate Cessna 172 aircraft out of Hayward Airport (HWD), conducting seven flights per day, five days per week. On these flights, we carry traffic reporters who report on the road conditions for the Bay Area's freeways. We operate these flights in three shifts: early morning, midday, and evening, Monday through Friday. As a pilot, you will report to the Hayward Airport 30 minutes prior to your departure time, complete a thorough preflight inspection, and follow the announcers in-flight directions on where to go. The Traffic Watch shifts are 2.5 to 3.5 hours long and should take you along a predetermined route, if nothing out of the ordinary happens. Most pilots work one shift per day, five days per week, flying about 50 to 60 hours per month.
Q. What are the requirements to fly Traffic Watch?
You will need a total of 500 hours of flight time, at least 25 of which is in the Cessna 172. You should be comfortable in IFR conditions, in summer time you will find that the morning fog will require you to take off IFR on a regular basis. You will also need to complete a Traffic Watch Checkout.
Q. What other options are there for building time?
There are very few pilot jobs for pilots with less than 1,200 to 1,500 flight hours. EeAir is in the unique position of being able to offer Traffic Watch positions to pilots in order to help them get the hours that they need to further their careers.
