Some questions I have before my IFR checkride...

taseal, Kudos on trying to further your instrument knowledge, but what you're doing might be a tad counter productive. At your level, you only need to be concerned about Part 91 regulations. Don't start studying the additional (and often confusing) layer of regulations that is part 121 until...

    Dear Airlines and Unionized Pilots

Maybe you need to re-evaulate your feelings on this issue. Is it unfair that they're "living the dream" AND get paid an above average wage to do it...or do you consider it unfair because it's someone else in that position and not you? Your post shows envy more then disgust.

ATP Written expiration dates and working at a 121 carrier

Re: ATP Written expiration dates and working at a 121 carrie Incorrect on both counts! The test DOES expire. However, if you complete a 121 air carrier's approved upgrade training course, you may submit the expired test results as if they were current. Refer to 61.39(7)(b). The reg...

    Delta/NWA back on?

I can agree on your point that the Captain's got somewhat hosed, but most of the FO's I think had it alright. I was pushed down 20 numbers by FOs, and lost 6 months of seniority gained...add the captain's to the equation, and I had a lower number then what I started at the previous year. The...

    Downturn in Aviation

It's a slow down, but it ain't no Setpember-October 2001. You know, when airlines very abruptly stopped hiring, furloughed THOUSDANDS within the span of a few months, and that included many regionals (who for the most part are still hiring). And then of course, there was no hiring at many...

    ERAU $46,000/yr?!?!

How about this for a plan then: spend a fraction of the cost and get an A.S. degree. Get your certificates and ratings cheaper at the same time. Transfer the said A.S. degree to ERAU, along with credit for licenses and ratings, which can lower the remaining credit needed to get a B.S. degree to...

    ATP Experience requirements

I see what you mean, it is an interesting coincidence. However, the two regs are completely unrelated. It's interesting that you bring up this ICAO restriction. I've always been vaguely aware of it, but hadn't thought much about when it applies until you posted. The wording is a little funny...

    Delta Connection Academy

I agree. After 3 years of instructing, I found that what determines success in this field most of all is the student. A good, highly motivated student could excel in both the less structured FBO route as well as the spoon feeding academy. The good student didn't need to learn to fly GA aircraft...

NTSB Info from Recent 172 crash

I couldn't help but let this quote bother me...did he/she really say that? That would cause me to shake my head in disbelief coming from a regular pilot...but from someone who is in charge of training others, it's particularly disturbing. As far as this accident goes, flying overweight alone...

Pro's and Con's of Flight Schools

2030 sounds a little optimistic on those 100K+ loans...but possible if you pay more then the $500/month minimum payment! all while living on $1500/month take home first year regional pay. Of course, the pro is there will be the almost instant gratification of sitting in an RJ that gives a...

Looking for FBO with cheap rates

Re: 55-60K to spend...... I'd suggest going to an FBO, and learning to fly in the cheapest, oldest Cessna 172 you can find (thats well maintained). Get your CFI ratings, teach and immerse yourself in GA flying with an emphasis on instrument instruction for a few years. That'll teach you how to...

    Delta Connection Academy

As a former DCA student and CFI, I'd advise against it. The flight training was good, but horrendously overpriced. I took my flight training between 1999-2001 at a college campus, when the prices were significantly lower and the prices at college bases even more so. By the time I left in...

Suspended!! (unfortunately, this is not hypothetical)

lol that's quite a predicament. While light aircraft aren't approved into areas of known icing, it's possible to inadvertently fly into an area of unknown icing. Here's what sucks...severe icing is defined as an accumulation of ice that ice protection systems fail to remove. Since a C-172 has no...

New English Proficiency Endorsement Needed for International

Re: New English Proficiency Endorsement Needed for Internati Here's something they didn't address: I've got a temporary certificate dated 1/22/08. It has no English endorsement on it. It'll take a while for the permanent certificate to come. I could request a new permanent English proficient...

    Regional Hiring in the past?

The minimum times have shifted wildly in the last few years, along with the average time of a new hire. When I got hired at CHQ in 2004, I thought they were pretty low at around 1500TT. I got on with 1200TT and by far was the lowest time guy in my class, most of whome had well in excess of...

    Practical Test Standards

My main beef with the PTS is that while it tries to keep checkrides standardized and fair, it somewhat falls short of doing that. Often the wording in a task as to what the objective is can be too vague, and still allows too much leeway for unreasonable examiners. For example (from the...

    ATP question

Yes - It won't be a very useful ATP, but it will still be an ATP. No - A multiengine ATP is a multiengine ATP. As Minitour stated earlier, most people will get their ATP when they upgrade in turbine equipment as 1)an ATP is required to fly as PIC of turbine aircraft under Part 121 2) A type...

    NAT Tracks

We use random routes to cross if we're going against the flow of traffic for that time of day (doing charters at odd hours, we do that A LOT). Rumot mill running fast: New ASA mins come Jan 08

And multiple times pilots have gone through RJ training with no glass experience and have done just fine. Pilot877 did. So did PCL_128. So did many other pilots on this board. I stand by my earlier comments....if you have solid instrument skills and are a competent pilot, you will do fine...

Rumot mill running fast: New ASA mins come Jan 08

I went through one. This was back in July 2004 after I had just finished instructing at DCA. They had just set up their own CRJ transition program with a week of ground school and 25 or so hours in a CRJ FTD. Since I had been instructing there for a while (since Aug. 2001, long before the idea...

    Chatting with Travolta

I'd assume the problem would be that he doesn't have a commercial certificate...a prerequisite to having an ATP. So that would make an additional hoop for him to jump through that I'm sure he doesn't see as worth it as a weekend warrior. Another problem would be having to take the ATP written...

That is crooked crooked crooked. I'm not sure what kind of a racket they're running in Sanford, but in Broward this was a big no no. If they do SOME brief, no reg violation is taking place. There is no time limit on the brief...it can be as long or as short as the CFI needs it to be to cover the material. It could literally be 2 to 3 minutes and still be legal. When it comes to a pre-flight briefing, you should be getting...

It's sad to hear that still going on. When I was a student, as well as an instructor, we'd be told every evaluation as a student and instructor would be read by the airline. Potential Comair Strike

I think you'd have to get in touch with Comair's union reps to find out what the definition of a scab is. As far as I know, each MEC (even within one union such as ALPA) gets to determine it's own definition of a scab. Proceed with extreme caution.
