PUBNAT3

Hi Joe,

I believe that is an option. I have not seen the forms myself yet, but I seem to recall people on this forum having done that.

Welcome to the group!

Hey all - my first post here, although I've been reading for quite some time now (and thank you all for all the great info so far).

I, like I assume (most) everyone in this thread, am waiting on the GEO-Prefs e-mail. Although it isn't a huge step in the process ... it's a step. My question (and I hope this is the right thread):

Does anyone know if it is possible to choose "nationwide" on the geo-prefs as a second option? Specifically I would like to have 1st choice MA, 2nd choice nationwide. The bottom line is I am willing to go ANYWHERE to make this work out.

Thanks!
Joe

Disclaimer about throughout the nation, Fairbanks Alaska, Guam, Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico. These fall into the throughout the nation, so be careful what you wish for, you just might get it.

Thanks to you both for your input. Call me crazy but I have a feeling GEO Prefs will be tomorrow. Here's to hoping, right? I know I'm not alone with my terrible impatience in this process.

Go figure. Thank you for both of your input. I thought it sounded a bit iffy, but like I said, was just making certain. The FAA isn't always the most intuitive.

I'm starting to wonder how many people here on JC received positions at facilities with low numbers of trainees. The facility I want to go to has 6 trainees, and is 79% staffed, with 5 controllers ready for retirement. Those are some horrid odds, wouldn't you say? The other facility in consideration has 14 trainees, 9 eligible for retirement, and is 86% staffed. In other words, I'm heartbroken, and Hell will probably need to freeze over in order for me to be to invited to a PEPC.

Are you getting those numbers from the database here? Because keep in mind that those are around two years old... and two years of imposed work orders have taken their toll, I'm sure. In any case, a lot may have changed since then, so don't count yourself out yet.

Yes, "Throughout the Nation" is an option. But as Sunburn said, keep in mind that they could potentially send you to Alaska, Guam, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, West Virginia, or... Delaware. "Hi, we're in Delaware."

...uh, anyway, not only do you need to consider beginning your training in a place that you may not have wanted after all, but you'll likely be staying there at least five years... and, depending on the staffing levels at that point, even longer. If it's a hard-to-staff place, they may not want to let you go, and it's always tougher to transfer out of your region, as I understand it.

Not trying to throw water on your fire, just want to make sure you're getting the whole picture... lots to consider.

Son of a...Thank you. Seriously.

A current controller sent me those numbers as something he "found out through his source", and I trusted them.

I thought it seemed a bit off, seeing as this video declared KLAS' dire need for controllers.

I know that the NATCA representatives aren't responsible for selecting people, but when I spoke to KLAS' representative, he made it sound like they just don't want the liability of a newb there. And considering that he has more intimate knowledge of the facility manager, and whomever they send to panels, I have a feeling that we're not going to see an OTS applicant go there anytime soon. And if they do, I doubt it will be me with my 84.

Hmm... wanting new people or not, if a tower needs controllers...

I'm sure every tower, TRACON and Center would like the luxury of receiving only fully-certified veterans who would quickly get used to the nuances of their own airspace and quickly become a leader among the staff. Good luck on that. It sounds to me like everyone is going to be taking on some new people.

Personally, if that's where you really want to go, I'd hit up every person there I could and sell myself like crazy... if they have to take a new applicant, I'm sure they'd be more inclined to take one who's proved why he or she should be there.

Or at least that's what I'd think. Ask Lawn Gnome -- he knows a lot about the hiring process.

I completely agree with you, and I intend to do that. It's just hard, because I cannot take tours there since I currently am 2,500 mi. away, and I can't ever get facility manager e-mail addresses, just general tower #s. :( I can't send a resume and such over the phone!

$20 says we get the geo prefs on Wednesday at 4:11 pm

:yup:

LOL. Eastern or Central?

Seeing as the ASAP server will be down on Wednesday the 17th, I doubt we'll get geo preference e-mails that or see PUBNAT7 that day.

Damn. I thought Wednesday the 17th came to me in a dream... I must have just seen it on the computer screen before bed last night. Is anyone only listing one facility?

Well that's the thing....if we list facilities in the comments section below the states we choose, are they likely to consider you for those facilities?...or should we just list states and hope for the best?

I listed the counties (as instructed) of the facilities I wanted (did not state facilities). I got the facility I wanted.

From what I have noticed also Boomer, it seems the ARTCC's are more desperate for people than the ATCT's. Do you get that feeling?

Well, consider that the average Center employs many more people than the average Tower (even those including TRACON)... so there will be, on average, more openings available. On average. Averagely.

*cough*

...hey, you seen this site yet? http://data.gannettnewsservice.com/airtraffic/airindex1.php

Yes I have seen that. I suppose it is a good general reference tool. There are a couple towers though that I have found that their info has changed significantly since that data was published. But again, I do like that site. And yes I understand centers have hundreds of controllers vs. the # of controllers in the towers, but I guess I was asking on a percentage basis, not quantity.

:yeahthat:

Well hell, I should have read your response before I spent several minutes formulating my response.

I will add to what you said though... there are much fewer ARTCC than Towers which is why they employ many more people and it 'appears' from just seeing the sheer number of people on here alone that they are more desperate. Ah crap, I think I just confused myself.

Just read what Rosstafari wrote.
