TSA Snafu Damages Nine Planes at O'Hare Field

Might be viewed as playing games - but I don't play games. I cover my ass.

I would call this playing games (or you can call it being unprofessional, or a jerk or CYA if thats what you are calling it):

If they want me to do something - they can stand 50 feet back and yell some inaudible phrase directing me to do what they would like - and well - if I don't want to do it. . .I couldn't hear you, and you're not coming closer. You might break it.

You can do what you wish, but if you really do try that, well, I'd like to be there to see. Honestly, it would be pretty entertaining!

To answer your question no I've never actually had to say a different speed, I've been lucky (knock on wood!! :D).

So I was thinking he used the pitot tube to hoist himself up but can someone tell me what a TAT probe is?

Total air temperature is a term used generally in aviation. In other applications it is called stagnation temperature. Total air temperature is measured by a specially designed temperature probe mounted on the surface of the aircraft. The probe is designed to bring the air to rest relative to the aircraft. As the air is brought to rest kinetic energy is converted to internal energy. The air is compressed and experiences an adiabatic increase in temperature. Therefore total air temperature is higher than the static (or ambient) air temperature.
Total air temperature is an essential input to an air data computer in order to enable computation of static air temperature and hence true airspeed.
The relationship between static and total air temperatures is given by:
where:
T0 = static air temperature (kelvin or degree Rankine)
Ttotal = total air temperature (kelvin or degree Rankine)
Ma = Mach number
ratio of specific heats = approx 1.4 for air

In practice the total air temperature probe will not perfectly recover the energy of the airflow and the temperature rise may not be entirely due to adiabatic process. In this case an empirical recovery factor (less than 1) may be introduced to compensate:
Where:
e = recovery factor (also noted Ct)

Typical recovery factors
Platinum wire ratiometer thermometer ("flush bulb type"): e ≈ 0.75 - 0.9
Double platinum tube ratiometer thermometer ("TAT probe"): e ≈ 1
Other notations
Total air temperature (TAT) is also called: indicated air temperature (IAT) or ram air temperature (RAT)
Static air temperature (SAT) is also called: outside air temperature (OAT) or true air temperature
The difference between TAT & SAT is called ram rise (RR)
In practice the ram rise is negligible for aircraft flying at (true) airspeeds under Mach 0.2

Here's the layout on the front of the EMB-145. The TAT probe is on the bottom, so that's probably what the moron TSA agent used as a step.

So a guy who knew nothing about the airplane was supposed to check our procedures. Niiiiiiice. They should certainly send the full bill to the TSA and charge the officer with criminal negligence.

Thank goodness the damage was caught before someone launched and had ADC problems.

Yet rampers continue to walk unscreened onto the ramp in many airports. Go TSA. You really can't make any more excuses for these people.

Hey, they almost got my Axe bodywash a few months ago. Until I was instructed to go put my uniform on in the bathroom and pass through.

I just love going back and forth with you wheels.

Just to be clear, the FO remark wasn't so much about an FO vs. CA kicking off the TSA, it's that we as pilots really don't have much say. It wasn't meant to be degrading to you, I will be an FO in 2 weeks (again). It's my understanding that if the TSA shows up at the gate to do an inspection I don't think we have recourse to say "NO" unless they don't have credentials. If anything we can really only have them call their supervisor.

I would like to know what happens if we say no, you bring up a good point that hasn't ever been adressed before.

Whew glad you made it. I'm sure they also laugh at their ridiculous rules as well. I know the few I've talked to do.

Doug I really hate to say it here but the TSA was right as stupid as the rule is. A pilot out of uniform is subject to the same rules as a normal passenger. I have been through this with my pilots a few times and confirmed it with our PSI.

I have to agree TSA is a joke. We had TSA out the other day video taping and taking pictures of us off loading the aircraft. Apparently they don't care about loading it is now just off loading.

TSA uses their badges to get onto the airport and past rampers then cry the security doesn't work...WTF you just bypassed security...If they were worried about security wouldn't use their ID's to gain access to the airport.

If TSA was worried about aircraft security they would learn how to do their job properly and leaving the planes to the pilots.

I appoligize if I missed it but did TSA fess up to breaking the aicraft right away or was this found damage on start up or taxi out? If their stupidity led to an accident could that TSA person be charged with terrorism?

Sorry for the long post but this really ticks me off.

Me too.

Between the FAA wanting to make sure I have offline airports and destinations I'm not even flying to updated, at random, at the gate. Then the TSA breaking aircraft in order to see if we're doing our job, and then the Fed thinking that folks that keep us separated and sequenced don't deserve a fair and decent wage, I'm a little pissy too.

The really SAD part is that the idiot obviously knew NOTHING about the aircraft in question.

I read about this elsewhere...

Isn't negligence or damage of an aircraft some sort of felony?

I seriously hope AMR/AE goes after this idiot with everything they've got.

The TSA is WAY out of line and needs to get reeled in BIG TIME.

Future reference- from now on, when the TSA wants to inspect an airplane in my presence, they'll do it while I escort them. If they ask why, I'll cite this example. I'll do so diplomatically, but that'll be all there is to it.

I can't believe how mad I was when I read about this earlier.

I'm pretty sure than negligence, vandalism, etc, against a registered vessel is a felony. I think such action resulting in bodily injury actually goes pretty far. Manslaughter and all that stuff would apply, I think.

The TSA has no mercy towards us. I suggest we return the favor.

I blame the Federal Government. They keep expanding TSA's authority and reach whereas they really don't know what the hell they're looking at.

What the hell does a guy that probably worked at Subway sandwich then went through a few weeks of training have doing inspecting aircraft anyway? If you don't know what a pitot tube is, you don't have any business on the ramp screwing with crap after hours.

What next, are they going to start taping holes (static ports) on the airplane to make sure the non-flying pilot is doing complete and thorough walkarounds?

I don't like the TSA more than anyone else, but let's be honest: Every organization has individuals within it that take their authority too far. We all can think of incidents where pilots have done the exact same thing. Not climbing pitot tubes and TAT probes to try and break into an airplane, but using the authority granted upon us by our company and the FAA to do some really dumb stuff.

The TSA has a ton of ridiculous rules and procedures, and they frustrate the shiznit out of me every day. However, they are better than the security structure that was in place prior to 9/11, and the TSA we have today is in my opinion better than the TSA we had in late 2001 and 2002. The department is less than seven years old, and they have an enormous task laid upon them. Even worse, they have a tightening budget and are expected to do more with less, just like us.

Like I said, they piss me off constantly. But I realize in the grand scheme of things, I shouldn't let the government bureaucracy and BS get my blood pressure to unacceptable levels, because there is not much I can do about it.

For those who want to go toe to toe with the folks at TSA, I ask you this: Would you rather be right, or happy?

Barack Obama in '08, baby.

If we get John McCain, I might last the first term before I gave up. Maybe.
