Wow... United and US Airways to Merge

I can see why they would want to merge with the whole Delta buying NWA thingy. gotta stay competitive. I wonder what they will do about ALPA? didn't Airways pilots just start USAPA? I could see this getting real ugly between west, East, and now United guys.

I've still got a lot to learn about this industry... And by no means am I a know it all. However i think this would be a great move for both. Like DAL/NWA they really dont compete in the same markets and this would be a good move...... If it is indeed the only way to be competitive and survive by merging then lets face it, its all about survival.... The USAPA things who knows..... I really think it'd depend which company purchased which and also how many of the UAL group can be convienced that USAPA would be better then ALPA... who knows.... funnier things have happen.... I'd be more interested in a scope clause at the regionals.... Would RAH/Mesa have to fly those 86 seaters at 76 seats.... etc.... which regionals would survive? Would RAH buy out the wholly owns.... etc etc.... many things out there in this merger...

Totally misleading title, if you read the article it says they are in "advanced talks". Nothing concrete, and like someone else said it has to be approved by the government.

I am waiting for American Airlines and Continental to start talking about mergers. Why not?

why should the government have any say into what two publicly owned companies do? IF that were the case I say bring it back to before being deregulated.

Next thing you know there will be one oil/gas company "ExxonMobileChevronShellBPSunoco" and gas will be $100.00/gallon. The government having a say in this sort of thing is good for consumers in general.

I guess it is good to have the government looking out for us. I never really paid much attention to company mergers until I started following the aviation industry last year. thanks for the wiki link!

Of course you'd be interested, because you don't like the fact that RAH flies 170/175's. We already have 170's in service for UAL and 175's for Airways. I doubt any scope would change.

You can bet that there would be a single carrier petition filed by somebody (maybe not one of the pilot groups) but as soon as that happens, it is possible that the UAL scope would force you to remove seats from the 175s flown for Airways.

Remember, Airways never gave up the scope for 86 seats. AWA did a long time ago. In the case of that merger, the Transition Agreement allowed for the reduction in scope protection. It is entirely possible that in another merger it could go the other way.

Those 170s are at what 76 seats correct not 86? And as said above... And also I was speaking about mesa as well..... both would be affected if they stuck to a scope and kept it at 76 or less which it should be at...... And I can GUARANTEE those mainline guys at Airways would be all for those planes to be back down to 76 seats if not less.... UAL has kept it that way for a reason as has DAL/CAL..... Reasons for things... Flying being taken away from mainline when you start flying these planes darn near 100 pax... Especially with airways having the E-190 and UAL possibly having furloughs. Why would their pilots want you to do flying they would be able to do. Therefore their pilots are let go and you and I have a job? Makes no sense to me.

side note Airdale you asked for a PM i gave it to ya about issues... no response?

Since ALPA will be the union for the combined USAir and United, ALPA should get the voting results from the USAPA vote and merge the non-USAPA voters into United by relative seniority and they should staple to the bottom the pro-USAPA voters.

Que PCL_128, the new Velo ;)

I'd just like to point out that I called this merger yesterday after the UAL/CAL deal fell through. Just wanted to pat myself on the back real quick. ;)

The USAPA things who knows..... I really think it'd depend which company purchased which and also how many of the UAL group can be convienced that USAPA would be better then ALPA... who knows.... funnier things have happen....

Who technically becomes the acquiring airline really has no bearing on who the surviving union is. The law requires that a new representational election take place if the two unions can't agree on who the surviving union will be. So, if that twit Bradford over at USAPA won't just accept defeat at the beginning, then a new vote will take place with the entire combined group. Let's take a look at the numbers:

Former AWA pilots, who voted about 99% in favor of ALPA - 1800 pilots
Original Airways pilots, who voted about 85% in favor of USAPA - 3200 pilots
UAL pilots, the strongest ALPA pilot group with huge ALPA support - 7500 pilots

The likely outcome would be:

USAPA - 2700 (29%)
ALPA - 9300 (71%)

In other words, a massive ALPA landslide. Virtually no UAL pilots will favor USAPA, as they know USAPA is only for themselves, plus the UAL pilots are mostly big ALPA supporters. You have to look long and hard to find a UAL pilot who doesn't wear his ALPA pin, many of whom have battle stars. I've seen the internal UAL message boards, and they are filled with posts from UAL pilots calling the USAPA voters "scabs" among other things. USAPA wouldn't survive a merger, thank God.

I'd be more interested in a scope clause at the regionals.... Would RAH/Mesa have to fly those 86 seaters at 76 seats.... etc.... which regionals would survive? Would RAH buy out the wholly owns.... etc etc.... many things out there in this merger...

The new UAL MEC Chairman is extremely militant. It is likely that UAL ALPA will push hard for tighter scope restrictions. The UAL pilots will demand it. The E-jets that are littering their ramps in ORD and DEN are really starting to piss them off. I think a restriction to 76 seats is a given. Possibly new limits on the number of airframes, also.
