i would not get too excited about a student loan payout if the FAA is running it. in 2005 NATCA asked for a student loan payment and was told NOOOOOOOOOO. there will be so many strings attached to it, what if you wash out you think they are going to let you keep the money????????? read the fine print and buyer be aware.

heres a little story about your employer to be. a controller in a VFR tower in CA bids on a job in WV, a tower tracon makeing more money but it was a no payed move bid.FAA gave the controller paperwork saying he would make $53,500 a year. controller moves his family across the USA at his own expence. one month after reporting to his new faciltiy the FAA changes his base pay to $51,000 and says tuff luck the rules that have forced on the work force say they can do this.

I went to Lyndon State college in Vermont. The loans could be covered by the FAA if they don't go back on what they said (they seem to do this a lot). I'm going through the process now, I don't really care where I end up as long as it's warm there... It's been winter here since October! I can't take it anymore!!! :panic:
 
Hey all -
I applied for the PUBNAT in the beginning of Mach - and I just got a phone call to schedule my test!!! Anyone going to Holtsville, NY on April 30th???

I was selected back in September for Maine but honestly I'm a city girl and couldn't imagine living waaaay out in Bangor :-). Lucky for me I got the chance and was selected again. I have been using the AT-SAT test prep book - can anyone recommend anything else?

I posted for FL, VA, PA, DC, NJ and NY... gl all! :rawk:
 
I had a dream to become a pilot and went to school to do so. In school the pilot program rates when up while the pay went down. I changed my major to Aviation Administration and focused on management. I thought if I couldn't be a pilot then I would look into becoming the next best thing, a controller. I applied and I am getting the chance to take initial test. I thought that this would be a great career choice.

After many hours of googling, reading blogs and forums (I like this forum the best), and asking questions of a current ATC supervisor, I am reluctant to pursue this position. All I see is the bad hype that is out in the press, the pain, suffering, and outrage that the trainees that just completed the academy have. The entire selection process seems to be top secret and nobody ever knows what is going on or will happen to them if they get selected and pass. I read about pay promises not being fulfilled. I read about per deim not being offered for one class, but the next year it is. I read about people having to go into debt and relying on public assistance during their training weeks. Many people on this very forum frown upon management and their decisions. I can understand that with an organization as big as the FAA, decisions are not going to please everyone, but I beg the question......are things as bad as they seem, or are they bad in heavy or highly worked destinations? I currently reside in Michigan and would like to come back here to work. There are openings in a lot of the class C and D airports. These are obviously not as busy as an ATL Tracon or the such. I would be curious as to the working conditions at DTW.

This post is long enough and perhaps I rambled too much. The point that I am trying get across and understand is this... there seem to be a lot of disgruntled current FAA employees and their concerns may be and are probably valid, but are these conditions present everywhere?

Thanks for reading this post, I am just happy to get the chance to take the test and perhaps with a little luck get invited to Oklahoma City to the academy. I am not looking for a $90k plus a year job, just a modest living with decent benefits. Then again, maybe I am just naive.

So I called this past week to ask when the applicants for the public announcement would get to provide their geographic preferences. The first lady I spoke with said "there was an area on the application for you to do that." I reminded her that the announcement said to select "United States - Throughout", so that's what I did and I wanted to know when I'd be able to provide specific preferences, since my particular state's hiring panel is meeting next month. She said "I know, but there was an area where you could provide 10 selections." I reiterated that the announcement specifically said to select Throughout the United States, so I didn't provide specific selections. She then said, "Well, you'll just have to wait and see who picks you up." At this point, I was pretty frustrated and told her that's not my fault that the instructions said one thing if we were supposed to do another. She then told me to hang on and transferred me to another lady.

The second lady basically told me I was right that we weren't supposed to provide preferences on the application. She said a contractor is currently building a URL for us to log in and provide our preferences. I asked her how soon we could expect to do that, and she said she didn't know.

I have no idea if this form is still valid, but I'm filling it out and sending it to the Aviation Careers office tomorrow at the address on the public announcement.

wow thats a great score...any parts on the test that you found hard? or anything that tried to trick you? im takin the test in 5 days, and i just want to make sure i know as much as i can. also, how long did the test take you?
 
For those that were asking about location. It told you to pick the "throughout nation" job, this is the opening that is open throughout the nation just like a few other openings the FAA has. Whe you filed out the application there was a spot to put your geographic prefrences. You selected the state and then the cities where facilities were available in that state and you ranked them from one to ten. When you go back and look at your submitted application on ASAP for that job these preferences are listed under the questionnaire for that job. I would think when they pull people from selection panels that they will use those preferences. So if you did not fill any preferences in the available slot you will probably have an equal chance of getting pulled anywhere in the country.

That's the preference form they used for CTI students. Sending it in is going to be useless and may even confuse them.

I don't understand, in your post above you said that you spoke to someone at Aviation Careers and were told that they are in the process of setting up a website for applicants to log in and list their geographic preference.

You were given clear and precise instructions but elected to ignore them by sending a form that they never requested. Why do you do this? :confused:

I can't say there was any part of the test where I felt tricked, and for the most part, the test was what I expected. I attribute that to everyone on here that has been a lot of help in explaining the different sections, and the Prep Book. The Dials section was easy, I'd say for the applied math section, just take your time and try to get as many right as possible (I think I finished with a minute to spare), scan wasn't bad and they give you practice time. I had the most trouble with the Letter Factory portion. In the middle of it questions will pop up asking about what was on the screen, etc. to see if you are paying attention, so watch out for that. Otherwise, I crashed a couple planes on the ATC Simulator portion, and then made it through angles and the personality test (which isn't scored).

Overall the test started about 8:30 and I finished right before 1:00pm. I was the first person finished in the group, but I skipped all the breaks.

1. Was the math section pretty much the same as the Prep Book?
2. Did the letter factory on the CD ROM compare at all to the real test? (I still cant figure the directions out)

I'd say the math section was easier on the test than in the book, but you still need to be able to do it all in your head, which is why I'd say to take your time. I did almost all in my head, and any I couldn't figure out, I'd just use process of elimination.

The Letter Factory looks pretty much the same. The best news I can give you about it is that they give a lot of instructions on what to do, and there are 6 practice sessions, which really help you learn what to do. I wouldn't worry to much about that section, because it's one of those things you can get the hang of really quick in the practice sessions. Just watch out for the questions that pop up in the middle, they're meant to see if you're paying attention to what's on the screen, and I did horribly on those questions. I was never ready for them when they'd pop up
 
Livesrg05-Thanks for the response. I take the test on Monday. Have been studying with the guide, so I feel I should not be to suprised on the test.
 
Only took two days to get my test results back. 03/28/2008 09:14:12 AM (Central Time): An AT-SAT score of 70 or above is necessary for passing. Your score was 100. Eligible applicants are categorized as "well qualified" or "qualified" based on AT-SAT scores. :D
 
Reading the first post I see the OP wants a time frame of how things go for everyone so I'll list mine so far.

I applied for it maybe a week before it closed and live in Orlando, FL.

The day after this announcement closed I got a notice saying I've been selected to take the test.

About 2 weeks later I get a notice in the mail and an email giving me a number to call to set up my test.

I get a date of 3/28, a Friday, to take the test in Daytona Beach.

On 3/31, Monday, my score of 96.5 gets posted on the ASAP website at 2:01 central time.

Now I twiddle my thumbs waiting for the next step...:confused:
 
I just took my test today (04/01/08) in Holtsville, NY....if anyone has any questions about the test i will gladly give as much as i can. ask while its still fresh...i also used the Air Traffic Control Prep Book so if can tell you what is the same and what is different. ill let you know what i get when its posted in a few days...

I also took my test today, April 1st in Lisle, Ill... and just got home from a 6.5hr drive. The RVA reps were laid back, the Wyndham is a nice place, as are the surrounding suburbs. I stayed at the Best Western Naperville Inn, nice place (and cheap w/advanced res) and w/in 1 mile of the Wyndham. PM me if you have any specific Qs about the area/hotel.

you had to drive for 6.5 hours for your test? that sucks so much. mine was about 8 minutes from me. i hope you get a 100 for that kind of trip.
