Flying the real airplane (moved)

Re: Republic Hires 430 Hr Pilot!

Would instructing for another 500 hours in 172s and PA44s or similar teach that guy anything about flying a jet though? Maybe but probably not.

Kell, I am with you on the gaps in training thing. Do any airlines let the new hires go out and fly the plane for an hour or two to get used to it at all? I know they do at Great Lakes, I think they get about 5 hours of stalls and shooting approaches but I haven't heard of this happening with other carriers? To me, you can learn alot from doing some slow flight and some steep turns.

Re: Republic Hires 430 Hr Pilot!

They used to at my airline. Between passing your checkride and showing up to the first IOE, you'd fly the jet over to BHM and do some touch 'n goes.

I wish they could economically bring that back because it's a pain in the rump during IOE when you're making your very first flight in the jet, handling MEL's and throwing in dealing with flight attendant and passenger problems all at once.

Re: Republic Hires 430 Hr Pilot!

Actually, now that you mention the touch n goes, I do remember stopping in Macon GA one time and seeing an ASA CRJ do a few laps in the pattern. In the Regionals I could see it being really helpful but like you said the economics probably kill it though. I am guessing you won't be doing any touch and goes in the 76 any time soon.

Re: Republic Hires 430 Hr Pilot!

The version of 'touch and goes' that I'll be doing prior to my first Atlantic crossing is going to be a domestic IOE. Strangely, at this point in my training, even though I'll only pretty much be flying the 767-300ER, I'm more familiar with the 757-200.

And they're different. Don't let the "Oh, it's a single type rating" crowd fool you, there's differences! :)

And they're going to send me a -400 CD because apparently, they're going to combine the ER and -400 categories.

Re: Republic Hires 430 Hr Pilot!

Tim,

XJET used to do FAM (Familiarization) flights... I was lucky enough to get that before they did away with it when the fuel prices started skyrocketing in the summer of '05. It was basically just going through a full flight from pushback, take-off, several instrument and visual approaches, landings, and go-arounds... etc.

The company would fly us out to some lowly Texas outstation (Lubbock, Amarillo, Midland, etc) and we'd just grab the overnight aircraft with a check airman and go have fun "edu-tainment". Awesome experience!

I believe Skywest still does them...

It was a great experience and confidence booster... I wish we still did them.

I thought that DL was putting winglets on their 757's and putting them on more trans-atlantic trips, and letting the 738's do the trans-con trips.

And the 764 is sweet, remember your expression after flying the 717 sim in LGB? lOL!

Re: Republic Hires 430 Hr Pilot!

I'm going to start a new thread with this because this is nostalgia that shouldn't be buried in massive five pager.

The 757's are getting winglets, but they're not ETOPS. ETOPS is NOT a matter of simple range. The 75's they're buying from American (prior TWA) are ETOPS though even without the winglets.

Not even all the -300's are ETOPS if you can believe that! :)

MPenguin's 717 sim was crazy visual-wise. Apparently some of the 757/767 sims are on that level, but I haven't touched one yet. I finally get a yoke tomorrow afternoon!

I know ETOPS conversion can be expensive. Is big D gonna drop the duckets for ETOPS conversions?

And when are those friggin AA 757's coming to DL. Think that I saw an AA 757 with pratts, on final today at 202 and Priest Rd.

Yeah, I imagine moving from anything in the light singles and twins category to something with 50 pax in the back or capable of carrying 5,000 lbs of cargo will be a jump no matter how you slice it. Too bad they took that away, I bet it was really helpful.

Re: Republic Hires 430 Hr Pilot!

It's not really all that expensive.

The AA 757's are coming with the ETOPS peripherals, just that they've been 'unplugged'. So a couple proving runs and they're ETOPS capable.

Even the MX requirements for ETOPS birds are different. There's a lot of crap that goes into maintaining an ETOPS aircraft.

BTW, here's a little 'insider information' that, well, isn't "insider" since I'm posting this on a public forum and google indexes the forum every morning, but the entire 757/767-300/767-300ER is going to get the 767-400/777-200/300 instrumentation in the next two years. Flat panel six tube LCD's for the entire 757/767 fleet.

Only about $100K and two days of downtime per bird.

Yeah I agree Tim, it would be nice to fly the plane a little and get a feel for it before flying PAX. I know they have the sims but I have to guess that the actual plane will feel and fly a little different.

Sims and the real enchilada are mutually exclusive.

Now I'm talking "flight simulators" not "Microsoft flight sim", FTD's or flight training devices.

My first landing in either the 757 or 767 was a fully loaded 767-300 ATL-PBI.

I slapped that runway good!!!

I stood at the door and took it, though...

It's NOT a collective, Kevin! :)

My first "real leg as a jet pilot" as MCO-BOS, not only did I drop some masks, I had to scream at the captain when he almost crossed the active runway and created a runway incursion.

A friendly night at "The Rattlesnake" soothed all that ailed though.

That's awesome!!! :) :D

When I first started flying the Lear 45 my landings were real inconsistent. Then I realized every A/C I had flown to that point you got to shoot landings in. Now all of a sudden that wasn't the case. Even in the sim it's different because your always shooting an approach. Fly the gauges to mins, look up, pull em shut and land. So it would have definitely be beneficial to go shoot some landings.
