US Airways increases offer for Delta Air Lines

Duuuuuuude. You don't know what you're talking about. International flights are the big money makers, not domestic. And if you think that Pan Am was a domestic only company, then how exactly did Delta become the number one airline to Europe???

No, no, no. I realize that international flights are the big money makers. However, given that, the domestic flights are the big money losers here, which cancels out the international flights. You just can't ignore the front you are losing.

Imagine if we did that in WWII. "Umm, well, I see we are losing the Pacific front. Maybe if we just focus on the Eastern front, all of our troubles will go away."

And concerning Pan Am, read over my statement again. ;)

flywithUS,

I read your page one comments. You cited LCC issues, and how an increase in the domestic market would assit US Airways/America West/Delta Wannabees, to have higher coverage in areas that they are having difficulty competing with LCCs presently.

But, what is this impact on those who actually work for these carriers? What is your take on the current labor issues throughout the industry? Which is more important to you - I don't know, it may not matter, but do you presently have a vested interest in the industry? If you do, which is more important to you?

Putting food on the table and providing a stable lifestyle for your family? Or is it providing the lowest cost product to your customer so that the company can then come in, knock your knees out from you for all your hard work, and then slam you with lower pay and reduced benefits?

I don't know, I just don't buy it. Even of this pro-customer BS. Let the bean counters deal with that, but damn it, you better pay these men and women who are working overtime, and are nearly becoming illegal what they are worth, and what their risk is worth for doing the job, from FAs, to FOs, to CAPTs, to APs.

If I missed your discussion on labor, please direct me to it, or just reply with your take.

Also, your whole WWII analogy to the Aviation industry doesn't really fly. On so many levels.

That's a "little" over-simplified.

Dude, you're speaking Yoruba and I'm nigerian and still don't know what you're saying!

Sure, they will probably take a hit in the short-term. And God knows they have been through enough. However, now is not the time to disregard the future. You can't sacrifice long-term security for short-term gains.

Indeed, but that is the theme of things.

We need to fix the domestic market now. Simple as that.

I'm going to try to say this as diplomatically as possible, so if I slip, I apologize, it's probably the merlot talking.

But holy crap dude, Doug Parker's got you guys so stuffed to the brim with koolaid it's not even funny! Is he going to grow long hair and claim he's a carpenter next or what?

Dude. What're you talking about? US Airways has a good route system. The east coast is where most of the money is made flying domestically. Yes they could use a west coast hub but the AmWest merger helped solve that conumdrum. So now LCC is many parts, but the most recent addition was strong on the west coast and the old side was strong on the ewast coast.

So what exactly about LCC domestic side needs to be fixed? I'm gonna say it again. International is where an airline is going to make the money now. With regional expansion in the future a major might resemble a european carrier. With all domestic flights operated by a feeder and only international flights being mainline. Again, US Airways should grow their airline (in terms of destinations) much like Delta is by beefing up it's international ops. Not buy merging or acquiring someone to get growth, which in the end would cause shinkage.

Somewhere at Toysrus is a game called Clue. Get one!

I haven't listen to one of Parker's speeches or presentations. This is something that I believed needed to happen before US even merged with HP. (Not necessarily a merger between US and DL, but mergers in general.)

I'm not talking about US. I am not talking about DL. I am not talking about HP. I am talking about the U.S. airline industry!

I don't think Parker and USAir have figured it out yet, no one wants to be their dance partner because they haven't even finished the previous dance yet and the jury still out if he was 'all hands' during the song.

$30 billion-plus in debt from the combined company? Anyone in their right mind would quit if the thing was ever consummated to "beat the rush" before the inevitable trip to bankruptcy court and the job market tightens.

Doug Parker's not Jesus. He's not "bold" and he's not part of a new "paradigm shift". Just another shyster trying to make a buck off of his employee's backs. The quicker the cheerleaders realize that, the better off they'll be.

Besides, whenever DL emerges as a stand alone company. Parker's going to have hell to pay. HELL...TO...PAY.

I agree there are TONS of work to be done still with prior business. But to get the full benefit of the merger, DL (or NW) still need to be in bankruptcy.

And about that hell to pay, if HP could take on WN...DL is not going to be a problem.

Step back from the press release! :)

And sorry, but HP taking on SWA is about like the "Maginot Line" and the 1939 German army.

Don't think so. It's true that all the carriers needed to get through a reorganization, but a post-emergence merger shouldn't be a problem. In fact it could be made part of the plan.

Actually that's pretty much what we did, but that's another debate.

I do agree with you in general that industry consolidation is where we are headed and that it will be a good thing in the long run. But I've thought that for at least 10 years. Delta/NWA would be a stronger, better merger or CAL/DAL/NWA. I suspect one of the reasons Parker is being so aggressive is he knows that eventually he will be facing mega-carriers like those and doesn't want to get shut-out of international routes.
