Hawaiian airlines is cutting free in-flight meals, moving to pre-paid menu

It's all about the stockholders. You might try to offer a premium experience but if it doesn't turn a profit immediately the board will change direction purely for self preservation. WN is an anomaly, they conquered the LC airline market, now they're looking at Delta and salivating.
And that's not working well for them. Up until 2021 I knew a lot of loyal WN flyers. Almost every last one jumped ship.

No one wants an LCC with Legacy prices but less available perks than Spirit (big front seat).

Given an honest apples to apples choice between Delta and Southwest which ticket would you purchase these days?

Delta. Are you serious? How can you even compare them. Delta Comfort vs the Southwest legroom product is no contest.

Seat padding, IFE, the snacks and drinks, the value of Skymiles vs Rapid Rewards, the clientele, cabin ambiance, the gate lounges, INTERLINE AGREEMENTS IN IROPS, ect.

I'd rather fly Delta, but living in PHX, Southwest often has the cheapest and most direct flights. I'm starting a new job based out of SLC here in a few weeks though so hopefully I'll have reason to fly DL more often. I flew them last week up to SLC and their service is noticeably more premium than Southwest.

Everyone, including myself, seems to agree Delta offers the best bang for the the buck. Southwest was the leader in the low cost airline segment but they were undercut by ultra low cost airlines and as a result the experience was stripped down even further to compete. Now they want to pivot to a slightly more upscale experience but instead of playing slap hand with the ULCCs they'll be fighting with the big three. My suggestion is to bring back the beer nuts, they were the best part of flying Southwest back in the day.

I once endured a Charlotte to LAX non stop on a 319 and I think it was Frontier. The actual operation of the flight appeared to work safely and flawlessly, kudos to them. The experience as a passenger was not great, I do remember the Wi-Fi worked after they charged me for access. I was returning from a funeral so I wasn't in the mood for YouTube or anything else so I just watched our flight traverse the country on flightaware splitting my time between looking at my iPad (there was no onboard IFE if you didn't bring it yourself) and looking out of the window while trying to find a comfortable position in my seat. I'd done this nonstop multiple times prior but it was always a red eye on one of the big three and this was my first ULCC experience, it sucked. I used to fly Southwest a few times a year and it was fun, the flights were probably around an hour long, the seats weren't torturous and a they'd give you a beer and a bag of peanuts with a smile. I'm not saying I wasn't embarrassed for the cabin crew that were forced to sing silly songs and pretend to enjoy it. Their business model was solid and profitable for decades until it wasn't. Back then, I lived in LA, if I needed to travel around the SW of the country Southwest could get me where I was going with no stops or if you did stop you could just stay in your seat and converse with the cabin crew during the pit stop and they might bring you a Heineken. I've said it before and I'll say it again, boardrooms beholden to stockholders will eventually ruin everything they get into. SpaceX is huge right now because they've been running loose, hard and fast without the pressure that uneducated folks that now own the company will immediately start to apply on the board members to reduce costs, streamline manufacturing and maximize profits. It's going to fall apart soon and it'll be their own fault because they took the payday and relinquished control. It's a story that's been told many times about plenty of companies but here we go again.

I don't recall a winglet saying howdy, what other dominatrix machine was I being safely and efficiently conveyed on across the country? This was 2017 and I can't recall what airline we flew on, I was a bit distraught and just told my wife to book the cheapest non stop flights available. It was not one of the majors. So who was it? I know it wasn't Southwest because it was an Airbus and it was a direct flight.

I live in PHX and I really appreciated SWA's previous product, but in Arizona living near SCF, JSX is the shizz.

I like nonstops. So if it's LAX, I'll buy a ticket on Delta or see if SMO is reasonable on JSX. LAS it'll be JSX 100%. LGB would be SWA. Anywhere long distance will be Delta.

I danced with American for a bit for non-stops to FL but I'm a little upset with them. Bought non-stop first class tickets to MIA from PHX, no television, my seat was broken and the FA's basically said "We don't fix sh-- here anymore, ever since the merger (blah blah blah)" so I gave up.

If I'm going to ANC, I'd buy FC on Alaska but I haven't been too happy with their product.

Air Canada in business class to YVR next month, I'll let you guys know how it goes! :)

Yeah, I'm bougjie.

With all the millions you’re making from membership dues here, you should be on a G700.

No idea. It's your story.

But if I had to guess, I'd say you were on American.

I flew first class on Varig from Miami to Rio in 1992. It was delightful. Excellent food and particularly good coffee. I had the middle aisle of a 747 to myself. There was a woman a row ahead on the left side of the plane that changed completely into pajamas prior to going to sleep. So that was interesting.

I can't get the thought of a cute-sounding girl on the radio out there, saying "heeeeyyyyyyy BIG STRIPE at FL360". "Oh hey gurrrrl, how YOU doin?"

Is that their callsign? I had no idea!

One of my good friends retired from Delta and went to work for them.

I shot him a text and asked "Must be nice driving from Cave Creek to Scottsdale to do a couple Vegas turns!" and I thought "Man, in retirement, that might be kind of fun!"

"Oh man, I wish. I can't hold it. I'm commuting to Vegas to fly the ATR"

Wait... IN retirement still playing the seniority and commuting game? Eff that! Ha!

Hahah oh god, F that.

But yes, I think its the cutest callsign out there, based on the voices I associate it with. That and Spiritwings :(

Unrelated side note, but today was last day of school, I'm doing a "VRBO" this month where you bid a reduced line, and I basically had nothing between the 8th and 30th. I wasn't even supposed to fly navy today, but my soon-to-be-retired backseater bud's pilot fell out, and I hopped into the flight. Ripped the • hot break over my family and our friends who were all out on the beach off the departure end of RWY 25, and was in swim trunks on a paddle board with the wife and another couple less than 60 mins later. He's an Air Line guy. I told him he's a hat dork and that's what he deserves for flying P-3's while I light the burners over all our wives. :)

edit: hahaha made you like that before I was finished editing my sick burn

I can't imagine being 66 years old and I'm only going to be able to drive 12 minutes to work if enough people croak, get lost in the simulator or medical-out.

All that "man, a couple SCF-LAS turns a few times a week, down the street, sounds fun!" became "That just sounds like being a regional pilot living in a crash pad again for no money"

I'd rather exotic dance at the retirement village: "Black Thunder's in the house, ladies. Here to make your walkers RUMBLE! WAaaaaaooo!"

Well to be fair, chocolate thunder is already trademarked :)

I feel like that myth is how all those fu*king geezers fell for that sales pitch. If I could retire tomorrow, nay, right this second, I would. Flying? Are you serious? Isn't that something I pay people to do for me? Tell me that kinda lie, and I'll do anything you want. These guys just can't hang it up. I don't think it's the flying. I think it is the 3rd house, 5th wife, 2nd alimony payment, and the god damn dog/3rd plane and it's annual. I would be less judgey if it were really about their enduring love of flying.
