Japan Airlines flight on fire

There actually are several ULCCs in Japan. It's just that the people that fly on them are better behaved than over here.

I've taken Peach and Spring flights. Pretty on par with Spirit as far as level of service, but way, way different passengers.

People in Japan are generally embarrassed if they inconvenience someone else, in the US that’s some people’s entire personality.

getting ready for a drive up to Crater Lake

I still think pre departure beverages while boarding is one of the dumbest things that airlines do. Sure, hold up everyone on the jetway so that the job kreator in 1c can get his 6am miller lite.
Works fine when boarding from 2L. Service isn't in the way of passengers turning right.

The Clooney movie “Up in the Air” stereotypes this a bit, when he says he gets in a security line behind Asian business men. Asians are efficient travelers.

My experience flying on JAL, Asians know how to fly efficiently. They board quickly, quickly get in their seats, ready to go. And same for deplaning. Unchaotic, efficient, and courteous.

We Americans are a-holes in comparison when it comes to airline travel.


I’d absolutely agree if this was a US airliner, you’d have some deaths when more than half the pax decide to stall the evacuation by opening overhead bins to get their bags.

I would say more than half of my commute flights the flight attendants make a PA about us being on an active taxiway and to take your seats and fasten your seatbelts.
 
Here's an extended version of the CCTV clip. Crash occurs at [03:47]. It's difficult to see, but it appears that the Coast Guard aircraft was holding on the runway for almost a minute before impact. -

This is a higher resolution video than I had seen before, I can't really tell, but it seems to me like they are not lined up with the runway, but holding beyond the hold short lines almost perpendicular to the runway. The wreckage of the -8 not moving with the A350 would seem to support this.

I would assume we are in accordance with ICAO procedures here in the US when we exchange traffic while utilizing line up and wait for this very reason. Again it is difficult to tell since I am not familiar with the airport, but it also appears the -8 may be at an intersection and not at the full length? That is also not allowed at night in the US unless a waiver is obtained and the runway is being used and advertised for departures only (Like 31L@KE at JFK for instance).

That’s one of the changes that came out of the USAir 1493 accident, as SKW 5569 was holding in position at an intersection downfield at night, and was subsequently forgotten about when USAir was cleared to land.

The DHC-8 was taking part in a potentially life-saving earthquake relief and rescue mission I was told by a friend in Japan, and it is speculated that accordingly, they were in a hurry.

What an odd thing to say
It is the very first thing a LOT of people in aviation said when they saw this, and I agree. Look the Aeroflot crash where people did die due to compliance issues (grabbing bags ect), the Red Air (Panama) MD-80 crash landing in MIA, the AA 767 in ORD...most cultures it is all but guaranteed that people will grab their crap and not follow instructions. I have yet to see any carryons or any pax lingering at the bottom of the slides taking videos.

I think if this happened to a UA 787 there would 100% be fatalities, and not because of the competency of the crew.

Same. Especially since I'm often flying airplanes without radios, that slight offset helps avoids the camouflage. It is too easy to blend into the piano keys.

Side note, this is the first major incident with the A350, right?
Correct, the first A350 hull loss I think.

The airport surveillance radars we use in the FAA would most likely be able to detect an aircraft that passed the hold short line, but we also occasionally get nuisance alerts and when that happens the whole thing goes out of service or into limited mode (no warnings at all) until Tech Ops fixes it. Detecting an aircraft at night with my eyes that passed the hold short line is a totally different story. Some configurations yes, but not all. I don't see any wigwags in this video so maybe they aren't there? They are pretty easy to spot and probably would have prevented this.

Taxiway lighting and signage at HND leaves a lot to be desired.

I've visited the USS Arizona memorial twice. It's a solemn place and the people that take you out to it ask that you remain silent in English, Japanese, and Chinese once in the memorial because it's a graveyard on the way out in the boat. I'm unsure of the actual cultural makeup of either group each time I visited but the majority were Asian and didn't appear have heard what they were told, bunch of loud Chatty Cathies taking pictures. People say that Americans are boisterous ignorant a-holes when traveling abroad, and that is likely true but we are not the only culture full of rude, disrespectful idiots that travel. Women getting "felt up" on an overcrowded train car in Tokyo is a real problem and has been for a long time. Ever heard the term tentacle porn and wondered where it came from?
