Trevor Jacob v2.0

Yes it's 1 in a million to become a Kardashian or something like that level celebrity. But I'm not sure why you are equating that level of "success" with being financially successful as a social media figure. There are lots and lots of people making $300k plus a year hustling as instagrammers. Bring in things like Patreon and OnlyFans and other subscription services, and you get a pretty large group of people who certainly aren't "celebrities" but have enough followers and Klout (remember that stupid metric?) to pull in enough marketing and sponsorship to make a pretty good living. The funny thing is that they are still putting in the effort.

OnlyFans.

I'd like to round up all the men who pay $$$$ on OnlyFans into the world's largest lecture hall, and have a power point presentation with the first slide stating, "You DO know porn is available free online, right?" And slides 2 through 1,342 would be individual links to free porn sites.

Seriously. Only a financial dumbass would spend their hard earned money on OnlyFans.

As stupid as it looks, snapping a thousand photos of your meal, choosing the right one, editing, creating a caption, posting, and the engaging with your followers, just so you can convince a big name company to pay you for offhand mentioning them in a random post, can take as much time, and is as much work, as going in to a 9-5 every day.

Again, this is not guaranteed. And even if you get one company (or several), this is not a life long career propisition that can pay the bills, rent/mortgage, and retirement for the VAST amount of NEARLY everyone.

Is this a logical / common-sense opinion, or is there some expertise in the field somewhere backing it up?

Edit to clarify: I'm not disagreeing with your position on this at all, in fact my tendency is too think along those same lines. I'm asking the above question primarily because I appreciate opinions based on data/facts/experts even more than my own (highly regarded, intelligent and thoughtful as they are).

Probably more the former than latter. I don't have a way to look up how many actually made it on insta and tiktok and getting paid good money, versus how many millions more are trying and yet no luck.

Common sense. It's like breaking into acting. You might get lucky and get a small gig - and even gigs don't last forever. The ultra rare person might be the next Tom Cruise. But most are going to be C list actors, maybe B list at best, get a couple parts, and be paycheck to paycheck at best, and certainly not long term.

Like Hollywood, this is a young person game. The older you get, there is always someone else better looking than you who can sell the same product to their similar sized audience as yours.

And if you dislike influencers, I’ve got some bad news because if you have over a certain threshold of followers, the airlines (most notably is UAL) will sponsor and partner with then on content creation.

I was in a meeting where they broke out the figures which they put into their social media platform and I haven’t felt more old and unhip in my entire life because it was a totally different language being spoken.

Love it or hate it, the downstream people trying to “break in” to corporate partnerships are going to complete ho’ themselves out for those like/share/subscribes because when they reach the threshold, they get access to film crews, production, sponsorship and, well, “fame”.

You really are an OG influencer. Started up a whole forum with a short biography on the page and got who knows how many members. Monetization just wasn't like it is now. I guess you could have chosen to charge a user fee. But you didn't and I'm happy for it!

Then there are a lot of financial dumbasses because a LOT more than "1 in a million" girls on that site are raking in over 6 figures.

This place is hilarious. Only in the bizarre liberal nerdfest can you find a plethora of people defending "influencer" culture.
I find it more surprising that you think it is a fad that will go away rather than explode.

I think you need to self-examine:

"Some of us tried to do things the normal way, but it was a disaster,"

If I may ask, why? You wrote some good legit jobs, ATC, airline pilot, airport ops, airport management. What in "normal" jobs went bad for you? And then what makes you think online insta-career is more appropriate?

As an example, a normal job is going to require you to show up to a certain place at a certain time. Was that a problem for you?

A normal job will require a decent amount of work hours and being answerable/accountable to someone higher up. Was that a problem?

When you call customer service somewhere and they give you an automated phone system prompt, do you ever say "speak to an agent" or do you just try to talk your way through the computer system?

“Only a financial dumbass would spend a bunch of money on an off-road oriented 4wd vehicle with poor handling on-road, where the vast majority of its time will be spent”.

To be clear, I don’t think you’re a dumbass at all for buying what you did, you have the right to do whatever,

But damn you and Todd are seriously judgmental.

Actually, it handles surprisingly well! Very surprised. Besides, the criteria was a SUV/Truck manual transmission :)

Sure, that you almost certainly don’t “need”.

And I totally get it, I’ve used the 4wd on my truck probably 10 times in 60k miles and 7 years. I’ll admit it’s and extravagance.

Kind of like people who want to pay money to an Onlyfans model. They clearly think it’s worth it.

I can’t stand people that use being an influencers as their primary job, such as say the Kardashians. Sure they now all have product lines and other merch, but they started as being influencers and cleat chasers (women that only date athletes) and used that with their family resources as seed money to launch their “brands”.

As others have tried to explain, it is the modern way of target marketing, and a genius method at that. No real assets or liabilities - and almost no overhead and production costs. They just need a smart phone with a forward facing camera and voila. Very few influencers need a traditional studio, or production crews, directors, grips… “Live from my apartment (or wherever) product placement they need.
