Arizona, Florida of the West...

I gotta admit, those airport fire stations are pretty cool. I don't think I'd want to bail out of a taxing aircraft to check one out though....

A man jumped out of taxiing airplane at Phoenix's Sky Harbor International Airport

Especially the fire stations in Phoenix. They drop a ton of creature comfort features into those stations. Stainless steel gas appliances, the expensive leather lazy boy recliners, pillow top mattresses, etc

Automatic light dimming in the sleeping quarters. And when the tones drop, only the room lights for the unit being dispatched illuminate and tones only in those rooms.

But lately, shockingly, they and other departments have been having to advertise for open positions and that they’re hiring. Something they’ve never had to do before.

Which is absolutely insane. I remember testing for Phoenix FD back in 2002 and there were 2500 of us at the Convention Centre sitting for the written exam.

That 13% deducted from state and county employees checks for the pension, hurts. It's about 20% with taxes and ARS deducted out of each check. When I worked for the state & county. I had to get two side gigs just to make a liveable wage. I don't know if that is why people are jumping ship. But that was the no.#1 reason that people were leaving when I worked for the country/state.

Tucson and Northwest FDs have had to have extra recruit academies due to people dropping out of academies. Not washing out or failing, but just figuring out a few weeks in that they’re not really interested in the job or that it’s too much work. And they just drop out. So not enough people graduate to end up filing the slots that need to be filled. This is unprecedented. Including needing to practically beg for people to apply and take the test. There’s probably people who would’ve killed for that job, and didn’t get selected for an academy.

Wow, that’s really strange. When I met my wife she was a FF/medic for a good dept in south FL. Extremely competitive to get in there. I spent a lot of time hanging out at the station with her and her co-workers over the years, and everything about it seemed super cool/great career.

If I hadn’t switched careers to become a pilot, I probably would’ve become a FF. I can’t imagine sitting in a cube or even just in front of a computer for 25+ years is much more appealing, but whatever. I wouldn’t be surprised if the drug free requirement turned people off too.

ah, doesn’t take effect til Jan 18. Was wondering if a bunch quit. Apparently 46% of PHX FD has had Covid but only 38% has gotten vaxxed.

so far it’s January yes. I haven’t kept up with the full current stats yet of them, but that sounds about right.

I tested for multiple agencies in the Valley in the early 2000s,never made it past the 2nd round interviews. Ended up riding on the box for over a decade. It used to be a nepotism thing (especially with PFD) or you had to be best friends with someone from the Dept to get hired. Really quite sad too, because they will ultimately end up lowering hiring standards in a profession where hiring standards really shouldn’t be lowered - the same could be said for aviation

My wife is an AZ state employee, it's no worse than deducting that amount to your 401K, which I do myself.

If you're making a good wage, yes. But when I worked at ASH (Arizona State Hospital), in 2013, I started at $16 an hr. as an uncovered employee. But there were level 2 covered employees only making $11. That 20% hurts them bad. Which is why ASH, the jails, Valleywise Health, the jails, prisons still continue to this day to have such high turnover for hourly employees.

We’ve managed to create a whole new permanent underclass…”the unwilling”.

Places around here have gone all in, full training, money, benefits, no drug tests, you name it. The only thing they’re not offering is free bags of weed.

No one is walking through the door.
