Pretty much, I just developed a pretty heavy disdain for this place. Lived there most of my first year, couldn't wait to get out.

I would imagine you and the wife talked about that though? It’s not like you just show up one day and a couple of kids live in the house.
The point I was trying to (apparently poorly) make is that if you want to do one thing (like not live in poop county Iowa), and the wife absolutely MUST live there, that’s not good. I’ve seen it, you’ve seen it, we all have. Doesn’t turn out well.

Sometimes you’re on a trip in Italy and you get a Skype call from your wife and all of the sudden you’re going to be a dad and you hadn’t discussed this option before.

Yeah, that would definitely suck.
But didn’t you and the mother talk about that possibility? My wife (girlfriend at the time) and I certainly did, as well as what’s required with an aviation career (that was still in the development phase).
Unless it was a one night stand, I’m just not understanding how anyone could be involved in a serious relationship and not discuss this. I guess this would explain the high amount of divorce in this industry though.

My wife isn't the only one who needs to be flexible in life. Our marriage is two people, not either of us telling the other what to do.
Sometimes flexibility means doing things my wife needs because it allows life to work.

Eh, more or less. I think the East Bay is pretty much perfection on Earth, and if and when the tech industry pooplords run out of money (lol, fat chance) I'd like to live there again.
It's been ridiculously gray and dreary here in IL this week.
