Reality check

Welp, I must hate my family because I hate short trips. I hate driving to the airport and I love foreign cities. Ya i try to maybe swap trips with less TAFB but I am not giving my the international stuff for Domestic. Nope nope nope.

Also @Derg I ordered the vest off Amazon for a whoppin $8 to shove in my bag. The horror!

I don't care where the overnight is because I don't go out. My goal with this job isn't to see awesome places and do awesome things. My goal with this job is to be at home as much as possible, fly airplanes, and make lots and lots of money. On an average overnight, I get to the hotel room, slam click, eat something out of my cooler, and sleep 12 hours (because the kids don't let me sleep at home).

I understand that this isn't the reason you or Derg do this job.I don't begrudge you guys wanting to see the world, but I've found that the world isn't worth seeing if I'm not doing it with my family.

The three of us live completely different lives, and that's a-ok.

I’ll agree that a trip without the family isn’t as satisfying as one with them. But there are places where you can get 12 hours of sleep then go out and explore the world. I do that on the regular. Not because kids keep me awake but because I’m a lazy sack of crap.

I totally agree with different stokes for different folks. You do you if that makes you happy. I just can’t wrap my head around not at least attempting to enjoy this badass world around us AND your time at home.

I love my time at home more than anything. This job is cool, but if I had a choice, I’d rather be at home. But since I can’t do that all the time and make money in this profession, might as well enjoy it.

I had one tell me that it may be standard on international flights, but he didn’t bid international for a reason and he wasn’t about to kowtow to European laws.

Ha! Probably should have applied to Southwest. Wait, they fly international. How about Jetbl.. no, them too... :)

I might get my own with some sort of funny lettering like “I’m CONQUISTADOR, Bitch!” “ばか!

I had a copilot that went from “Oh dude, so many green slips!” (I bet his wife and her tennis pro appreciate his absence and extra loot for ‘Wine Down Wednesday’) but said he didn’t want to be gone that much. But worked 22 days in the previous month (????)

Anyone going crazy over wearing a high visibility vest on the ramp, while in their pitch black pants and coat, really needs a reality check.

I get sketchy around 72 hours.

Once upon a time, airline pilots would grab about how little they worked.

Don't worry.

At some places it's still a badge of honor.

Cool, that’s good to hear!

Meanwhile, I have the “DUUUUDE! I got a green slip!” then while having a beer later on “My kids don’t know me, I’m out of clean underwear and I can’t believe I’ve moved backward in my category”.

“Cool story bro. Man, my piss is going to reek of IPA tomorrow morning. This is disgusting”

Yea not to long ago I flew with a guy like that. Making a quarter million dollars a year and having a hard time making ends meet? Same story as yours, kids don't know me/wife hates me etc etc.

The beauty of the profession is having a choice - some like to fly two legs a month, some like the OT and the paycheck it brings.
Some prefer to live in the place they live and commute, some move to live in base.
The ugly of the profession is being forced to do something other than what you want. Your poop might be the other guy's gold and vice versa, but if you are not in a position to swap it sucks.

The reality is the people perform the best doing things the way they enjoy doing. Deep and unexpected, I know.

I miss the days when pilots were trade unionists and understood that it was better for the profession when hoeing yourself out was frowned upon and contracts had line and credit caps.

All I ever hear from nAATives is about the good ole days of 18 days off and 75 hr lines. As they pick up open time from the makeup list for 100% pay
