Horizon

Whelp, I've got an interview with QX coming up next month. What's the word on the street over there lately? Any advice for prospective QX pilots?

That depends on why you want to go. It's really an awkward time to be applying because you're going to be junior on the Q400 as the jets are showing up.

Okay. Just be aware that ANC is also pretty senior.
I've heard that before, but also that folks will be upgrading soon. I've heard a lot of guys do a one leg commute to/from ANC, anyone have experience doing that? Do the ANC schedules lend themselves to commuting. What about ANC to SEA or PDX, if I had to do that while waiting for ANC?

A handful of people do it. It's not the easiest commute because I think the flights are usually pretty full but probably doable. The ANC schedules are nothing but day trips. Reserves fly maybe 200 hours a year.

Thanks. I don't think I was being super clear. I was thinking of two commuting scenarios, one from ANC to SEA/PDX, and one from DLG to ANC. But I think you mostly covered it. A cheap crash pad in ANC would be easy for me to come by as I've got family there.

Is it still just a bunch of FAI turns with 1 SCC per day? It sounded worse than a cubicle when they showed up.

For what it's worth, the latest rumor is that ANC will see the first jets, since it will be able to cover the entire state (minus the combi routes).

Are the jets going to be able to do the RNP's in Southeast?
IIRC the EJets are RNP .1. There might be some issues putting the approaches on the Horizon cert if the internet rumors about them only being legal because of grandfather clauses are true but I'm sure AS can just build new ones for Horizon off the Delta approaches. Probably be easier just to put the EJets on the AS cert right @SmoothLanderJ @Cheechako ?

I might have mentioned it before, but my biggest concern with QX is getting assigned to the Dash, then all of the ANC flying going to the jet and then getting stuck commuting. Anybody got a crystal ball?

I think it is extremely unlikely that the jets will go to Alaska. Nobody has said anything that even hinted at that. All of the proposals have been about how the jets are going to expand Horizon's market, which I take to mean longer routes and farther destinations in the lower 48.

That is a legitimate concern. You can hope that, once hired and flying the Q, that there is such a need for FOs in the jet, in ANC that they wave the seat lock. But I would not at all buy stock in that happening.
