A sigh of relief could be heard last week by many in the aviation industry as the bill that, if passed by Congress, would have privatized air traffic control was tossed out. At least for now.

ATC privatization has been a high priority for the Committee’s chairman, Bill Shuster, who is known to be closely linked with Airlines for America, an organization in favor of privatizing ATC services. A4A’s president and CEO Nicholas Calio has worked for years with Shuster to transfer air traffic services away from the FAA, claiming that the agency is incapable of putting through NextGen, the modernization of the air traffic control system.

General aviation alphabet groups lobbied heavily against the bill as the suggested not-for-profit ATC services organization would have been governed by an airline-centric board and funded by user fees.

With the FAA funding running out at the end of March, a temporary extension is expected soon while the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee drafts a new FAA reauthorization bill.

So uh, that's nice and all, but any plans to solve the staffing emergencies in ways that make sense? Like ditching the whole "diversity" thing and just hiring whoever is qualified of any color and gender. You know, the way it should be?

And doing something silly like, oh, giving preference to those who've successfully completed a CTI program since they've already demonstrated some aptitude for the job?

I'm sorry but the CTI program was a scam from the start. If you were bamboozled by it I am sorry, but the statistics show that CTI grads have no greater rate of success than the OLD off the street hiring process.

CTI didn't show you had the aptitiude for anything. Running sims and running traffic are like playing GTA and driving a real car. What a CTI spent 2-4 years learning is covered in 5 weeks at the academy. CTI schools taught you how to pass the Academy, not how to be a controller.

I've seen lots of trainees who can run a sim fine but completely collapse when you put them in live traffic. Sims are a reasonable representation, but overall not very realistic.

GET OUT OF MY HEAD AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH

P.S. Your starting to sound like a younger version on myself :)

Regarding the privatization, ALPA hasn't taken a stance for or against it. However (@Seggy this probably needs attention of our govt affairs people in DC), several times while I've been lobbying my congresspersons other pilots lobbying have spoken for ALPA stating we want to privatize it.

The FFA will do that to you. As far as privatization goes though, to quote a coworker, "I'll take the devil I know over the devil I don't know"

I've heard that but never seen anyone produce the statistics. I'm basing my opinion on the word of a good friend who taught at the academy at OKC. He said there was a a marked difference in the CTI grads vs. off-the-street. I was told 2/3rds of the off-the-streets in the group hired last spring washed out within 90 days.
