A little birdy/ExpressJet

Guys read this a few times, I had dinner last night with some of the people that do the hiring at my shop. One of the CPs that does interviews said there is no magic formula to getting a job. Internal recommendations help get them a interview but once they show up at the interview all internals and even the flight time go out the window and it is about the person sitting in front of the panel.
The hard part is getting to sit there, as you know.

I could use a detail to get the tree sap off my beemer!

Detailing? Harden up! 20 bucks of clay and some elbow grease is what ya' need.

I would hardly say "nowhere near upgrading", and no, the rates don't come right away. His point was if you don't move on. If you don't move on would you really prefer to be at GoJet versus here? Your rates alone might not be far apart initially, but such things as 100% DH would be different. Also, I have not met crews from GoJet who were happy with their employment. None.

Gojet, no. But pretty much anywhere else? Yeah, probably.

XJT isn't a bad place to be, but it's just another regional. Throw in the suck of being an FO for the better part of a century, never breaking 50k despite busting my ass every month, this is a pretty unpleasant situation to be in.

I hit 8 years in November and I'm 160 away from upgrade. 6 upgrades a month doesn't get me all hot and bothered.

I don't know about that. if you look at regionals that give bonuses, my salary is higher than their senior captain salary WITH the bonus. And my salary has not topped out.

Just curious, I was a U30xx number. Any one near that upgrading yet? I've since went back to the corp side of things so I haven't kept up.

Nope. I was a U36XX and I'd still be 125 from upgrading.
Wow. I'll never forget them saying in indoc. "Oh you're two years from upgrade." Less than that and we were furloughed. And "all new hires are getiing LAX/ONT". Spent my first three months commuting west coast to EWR. I will admit I was one of the lucky ones. I was able to bid back to LAX before the music stopped. Man, it's amazing what 7-8 years will do. Almost six years at my current gig and the last year as chief pilot. Craaaaazy.

Edit to add: where did you end up @jtrain609? I know there's been inside jokes but I still haven't figured it out. Yes, I'm slow.

If you go into this business assuming quick returns you will often be disappointed. I remember when I started out a United pilot telling me when he was hired in the early '70's he was told he'd be a captain within 4-5 years. Thirteen years later he was still sitting sideways on a panel.

That's the way I grew up. My dad was riding the panel in '83 when lorenzo screwed CO. He'd been there 6-7 years. But based on my upbringing, I don't know a single airline pilot that hasn't been through a hostile take over, merger, stapling, bankruptcy or several furloughs. Or a combination of any of those during their careers. The 121 game is probably a lot more stable then it has been based on the number of mergers as of late. Hopefully everyone who wants to go the 121 route will have a decent career.

We're all given promises.

I was supposed to be a 727 captain in seven years, L1011 captain in ten years.

A different regional :)

While I don't know that I would call the town where I grew up an airline town like Peachtree City ("Delta City"), there was a good deal of Pan Am presence and the Clippers use to take off from our bay.
Add to that the expectation I was given when I started, 5-8 years to upgrade at a regional; toss in some really sucky jobs I've had over the years and my attitude at each step has been pleasant surprise.

Quick returns are one thing. Any career progression at all is something else entirely.
