Money Talk$$$

Guys making $300K plus are paying at least 33% just in federal incone taxes. Some may be paying closer to 40%. Factor in state income taxes, union dues, etc... That big earnings statement gets whittled away pretty quick.

Not true in the slightest. Nobody pays an effective tax rate equal to their top marginal rate. Not even close.

I'm going to play the bad guy here. Don't take it too personally...

Nobody gives a flying fornication that YOU are a survivor.

Really good for you.

(small golf clap)

But by YOU being willing to fly for low pay because "you love to fly" and "have dreamed of flying since you were a wee little lad", you screw it up for the rest of us who actually are in this to be professionals.

Professionals who get paid what their skill set is worth whether we find the job to be fulfilling or not.

Or did get paid that until somebody like you comes along and agrees to do the job for less because the flying part gives you a hard on.

If you're in it just because you love to fly, get a plane and donate your time (and plane) to Angel Flight or something like that. They'll sure as hell appreciate it and you, being a survivor and all, should be just fine.

But, if you are going to go play in the 121 (or 135 or 91 professional) game, but on your damn big boy pants, act the part, and demand to be paid like a professional, just like the rest of us do.

If you can't do that, just stay the hell out. Better for everybody that way.
Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you THIS GUY!!!

How so? (For the uninformed such as myself?)

Well, for starters, because they're marginal rates. If you make $1 million per year and take not a single deduction over the standard, you still are only paying the the top 39.6% rate on $580,500 in income. The other income is being taxed at the rates from the lower marginal brackets. So that 39.6% bracket gets weighed down. You would only be paying about 35%, even though you fall into the 39.6% bracket. And that's a guy making over double the threshold to be in the top bracket! Someone making only $500k is in the same bracket, but his effective tax rate drops to 30.9%, because very little of his income falls into that bracket.

And then there are the deductions. Everyone has tons of them. The average person making $300k probably has an effective rate in the 20% range.

It's pretty simple. I have a high marginal tax rate, but deductions, write-offs, etc bring my effective tax rate into the low 20's.

This is probably going to get my labeled some communist on a news blog, but if you're even marginally coherent financially, the more you earn the more opportunities you have to reduce your tax exposure which is why it's hilarious that the guy in the doublewide gets worked up that we were going to expire the 'tax cuts on the rich' which would render the "job creators" extinct.

You could bring the top marginal tax rate to 50%, leaving the underlying language alone and I probably wouldn't effectively pay even half of that.

NOT THAT I ADVOCATE THAT, which I do not.

It's a very similar track to people that compare union contracts solely by pay rates and a couple bullet points on APC. In most cases, you're doing nothing but watching the same pornographic video and thinking you're actually having a relationship with the actress.

If I could like your post more than once I would.

Addendum:

Not to knock @B767, but I just couldn't imagine living on $26k. I've been there, being broke sucks balls. Pilots seem to have lots of days off. If you have fifteen to twenty days off a month. Picking up a three or four day, still leaves you ten days off a month or more. Maybe I'm only saying this coming from having a non-pilot job, where in a normal month you only have a mere eight days off a month, and those are only weekends. As a regional pilot on first year pay, I'd want to avoid the soup line, if I can. And I'd do that by picking up a few extra "shifts", so I could live more comfortably and not have to worry about paying this bill or not. Or not having gas money, or food. That or paying my bills and then not having ANY money left over to do anything, and being a prisoner in my apartment or house. I've done all that before, it sucks. Not going backwards. Not saying that this is B767 situation, just my way of thinking is all. Also having a two income household makes everything better, but I'm only a one income household.

What world are you living in where an RJ pilot gets 15-20 days off per month!? Senior legacy captains are getting 20 days off, not first year RJ drivers. First year you're scraping the bottom for schedules, and at our staffing levels the only thing you'll get is minimum days off, which is 11. At my seniority I'm getting between 11-13 days off per month. The months that I had 13, I needed to commute into base the night prior 3 times that month, so that's not a day off in my book.

I also just got off first year pay about 2 weeks ago and I made just over $22k my first 12 months on property. If I didn't commute and picked up trips I could have realistically brought that up to maybe $26-30k depending how hard I tried, but that means I would have had even less home life than I already do.

Something that every pilot should reference when making any purchase that could be even remotely work related!

To the OP. You are either really young and naive about this industry, or a troll. There is this great function called "search" on this website. I even heard of this one website called google, it is the bees knees. You should really check it out.

In all seriousnous though, the questions you have can be answered with some research if you really are that interested in your future.

Why didn't you pick up a ton of open time, to make a livable wage?

It may not seem like it, but you're usually beat after flying your normal rotation.

The schedule at my old company was 15 on 13 off. Sometimes I'd volunteer to extend a few days and it always was border line fatiguing everyone of those days.

I am a survivor. I always I find a way to support myself.
This tone is starting to give me flashbacks, as is the avatar. I and others have actually been trying to give you some decent advice that you seem to be ignoring, and with the comments and questions you have been making/asking, the boxes simply are not lining up. I tried to give you the benefit of the doubt....but now that is questionable. I hope I am wrong.

BEING A PILOT IS THE ONLY THING I CAN DO, IT'S MY LIFE. I WILL REACH MY GOAL NO MATTER WHAT

In the future, just click report and add it to the moderation queue.

Once upon a time, people got themselves all aflutter with the idea that I was Qutch.
