German Wings A320 crashed

Sure it was an unknown unknown before this event, but something tells me US management has better checks and balances. I can't point to what, and I may be proved wrong in time, it's just a feeling I hold.

I'd be interested to know what his sympathies or otherwise with the strike were for example.

"Something tells" you? Would it be hallucinogenic drugs that might be doing that?

If there's a knee-jerk reaction to this, it'll be disastrous. Mark my words, we'll look back on this as one of the milestones on the road to our replacement if people fly off the handle about this.

I'm pretty sure some countries carriers could have improved management practices to prevent this. People seem to want a Jack Welch style proof to go with it.

Yes because us German pilots are a bunch of crazies compared to our perfectly sane American counterparts. Oh America, why can't we be as mentally secure as you.

Ultimately this was a 28 year old instable man. This event is the first to happen in Europe where a pilot committed suicide to my knowledge. There's always a first time. Maybe when it happens in America I will post about how I could never see this happening to someone working for Lufthansa, Air France, or British Airways.

You flushed one! Hurry grab yer gun, Bubba!

I'm pretty sure that some of us know a good bit about management practices in the U.S. and elsewhere, hence the sarcasm. I can tell you with 100% certainty that U.S. practices would NOT prevent this.

I cant see someone flying for Delta, American, United doing the same thing, sure there are plenty of life pressures, but after the bitching the job gets done. This says more about Lufthansa and crew management/screening (no one has mentioned the strike yet...)
.

Impossible to say. You're talking about 30,000+ guys. All it takes is one bad apple.

While I totally sympathize with those who decide to kill themselves because of depression or other struggles I have zero patience for murderers. Others have alluded to it in earlier posts, but there is no excuse for killing 150 other people if you intend to take your own life! What makes it even more upsetting for is that the media and others are quick to sympathize with a murderous suicidal person if they happen to be young, vibrant, and i hate to say it...Caucasian. Some in the media. for example were quick to excuse the monster who shot up a movie theater in Aurora CO as being under psychological stress. Or the lunatic who shot up the place in Norway, a few years back. This kind of benefit of doubt is never afforded to murderous minorities. If this pilot's name was Mohammed or some other exotic name, I wonder how many would even entertain sympathizing with his action. P.S not directly in response to any thing said here. Just a general rant.

Let's hope I'm right?

. When DC-10s were crashing, people actively avoided them. Some companies wouldn't book employees on them in the late 70s/very early 80s.

That was purely the fault of the NTSB with the 1979 AA 191 crash. It was a colossal screw-up when when NTSB vice chair Elwood Driver gave a press briefing where he held up a broken engine pylon mount bolt, thus implying that there was a structural deficiency of the DC-10 aircraft itself, rather than preserving the evidence integrity and following it to where the true cause was found: a maintenance error in both operation as well as policy. Driver's extremely irresponsible action in front of the media with a piece of evidence that was entirely inconclusive in and of itself, seemingly minor, had major implications to the DC-10 aircraft which were wholly unwarranted, and which damaged the reputation of that aircraft to a degree with which it never was able to recover.

Ahhh, actually you are the one having a knee jerk reaction here when you say 'mark my words'.

If we are replaced by pilotless aircraft, there is even less skin in the game. One can be murderous and take down hundreds of people.

Personnel Reliability Program. Just like what our military people who work with NBC-related items are required to work with. Already have heard that one bounced around for 121 crews now.

Sheesh....

Hundreds?

Thousands.

And you could do it without leaving your desk at home.
