Tip the Damned Maid! (An article about tipping)

No. Us "real" part 91 types don't bother with hotel vans. They bring our rental car plane-side after the pax leave. And if the don't? Heads. Will. Roll. Do they really expect me to roll my bag through the lobby to the parking lot? I'm no heathen!!! :)

Why do we keep getting the car the mechanic uses to pick up greasy parts with?

I think that if hotels were really planning on using tips as a bargaining chip against housekeeping staff they'd give guests the ability to add a tip on their final bill and charge it to the same credit card as the room. Most business travelers wouldn't think twice about throwing $5 a day onto the company AMEX.

I wonder what will happen to this sort of tipping in 15-20 years as cash transactions become less and less common. I have to make a concerted effort now to keep singles in my wallet for tips because I don't really use cash for much else (aside from the mandatory Ben Franklin or two for emergencies).. It's especially true overseas where I often don't want to make an ATM transaction and get a pile of Singapore dollars with the knowledge that I probably won't be back there for a few years, if ever. Waitstaff of course can add it onto the receipts, not so for maids or van drivers.

Also, I learned long ago that trying to argue with people about tipping on the internet is just a losing proposition. You might as well try convincing people about the toilet paper roll orientation thing.....just do whatever you want....

Here's a simple, elegant solution.

Domestically, you probably amass a pretty good chunk of spare change during the day and especially after debrief and dinner.

So take all that pocket change and just leave it in the envelope the next morning.

It's probably more than a dollar or two, you don't have to worry about storing pocket change in your bags and you're helping.

Always* tip your van drivers. Yes, you can write it off.

*Unless they're being penises by picking you up at the terminal, driving to the opposite end of the airport and waiting at the FBO for a couple @Boris Badenov types to casually saunter out to the van when you're on a short layover.
I very rarely ever pay with cash anymore, for anything. I always have some with me, but hardly touch it. The only time I concern myself with cash is when I load up with $1s before a trip.

In the other thread you are bitching because you think the Deltoids are looking down at some folks. That is false.

What is true, is you are looking down at maids for possibly making more than you.

Quite hypocritical of you.

Oh now that's just laughable. I don't look down on the maids. But I sure as hell ain't going to tip them.

Explain to me how not tipping them is looking down on them.

Edit to add: Moreover, I don't look down on "Deltoids." But I think their hiring practices are flawed.

You're doing it wrong. It also helps to use a Fortune 50 companies rental agreement with the rental car agency. Mad discounts, yo!

Even then, I some times have to roll my bags through the FBO like a peasant. Stoooooopid SIDA rules!

Now, I don't fly for that Fortune 50 company, we just happen to sell a lot of their "stuff". If that makes sense?

Just went out to dinner with the Commander. We are at a "smallish" city so had to take the hotel van for dinner. We both tipped a dollar each way. Also, we both left 20% for the waitress.

Act like professionals. Tip.
So you tipped traditional amounts for jobs that are traditionally tipped. That's not what we are talking bout here.

Some guys on here don't tip the van driver. So I thought my point was helpful to the conversation.

I do have to say just to make the point, I almost always tip van drivers. But one day at JFK, the driver was very rude, wouldn't lift anyone's bags, and drove like a madman. We literally had to hold on tight. I was fairly concerned for our safety. And when I didn't tip him I got harassed by the rest of the crew. But I have to draw the line at awful service.
