Tip the Damned Maid! (An article about tipping)

Where is your evidence they don't? Remember, minimum wage is there because companies will race to the bottom of what they can get away with paying employees. If their practices are similar to Hyatt, then there is evidence of paying crappy wages:
"[Fired] housekeepers originally earned around $14–16 per hour, while the replacement workers are paid $8 per hour."

Here's what I found: "A Marriott housekeeper generally starts out earning around minimum wage. Pay rates for housekeepers may increase over time. On average, a Marriott housekeeper earns $10.00 per hour. A full-time housekeeper may earn an annual salary ranging from $20,000 to $30,000 a year. In addition to base pay, Marriott offers generous work benefits to eligible associates. Qualified Marriott housekeepers enjoy employment benefits of 401(k) retirement plans, paid time off, and healthcare options. All Marriott employees may take advantage of schedule flexibility, paid training, and discounts on hotel rooms."

By the way, I looked at the stock price for Marriott (since we seem to be picking on them), it has gone from $13.20 in FEB 09 to $79.40 in FEB 15. That increase is partially from stock repurchase by the company, but principally from the profits (which is how they are buying stock) increasing. Do you think the workers have seen such generous % increases in their wages over a similar time period?

Why do you think that share price is related to profitability? It will be over long periods of time, but not over shorter periods of time, because the market is inefficient. Are you aware that Marriott's net profit margin is only 5.25%? And that's about the highest it's been in 10 years. But more importantly, are you aware that each Marriott hotel is independently owned and operated, and that Marriott International's share performance has absolutely nothing to do with the profitability of the local hotel? The local owner pays Marriott International based upon room revenue, not profitability. So he has to keep costs under tight control. If the competition is paying a housekeeper $8/hr, he can't pay $12/hr. Welcome to the realities of running a business.

No, a BETTER tip is for good service.

Ah, OK. Then we should tip everyone, and tip everyone more if they provide good service?

Gotcha. I'll tip the front desk worker at the hotel in the morning- maybe $2 if she smiles at me! Then I'll tip the van driver (I always do). Then I'll tip the TSA worker st KCM. Maybe $2 if she smiles!! I'll tip the gate agent at the podium, then maybe the rampers when I do the walk around.

I think I'm starting to get it...

Yup. She probably does. A quick peak at what they make per hour, plus glassdoor.com, we make about the same. So should I hold my hat for tips as puerile get off the plane now?

Just some old man advice here, but when airline pilots with years of experience, some with debt from flight training and the type of dedication it takes, when we bemoan pay by screaming "the maid makes more than me!" to bring some sort of shame to the industry, it's not going to do anything other than make people think "Well crap man, the maid gets to sleep in his own bed at night and gets all the free hotel porn he can watch, tell me again why you're a pilot?" :)

I know a guy who did. That ended up building her a palatial estate after discovering she was having twins and she with the house and the loot.

Don't screw the maid. This ain't some Jennifer Lopez movie.
I've yet to see a hotel maid that I would do that to even with a gun to my head. Maybe I need to stay in nicer hotels.

In the other thread you are bitching because you think the Deltoids are looking down at some folks. That is false.

What is true, is you are looking down at maids for possibly making more than you.

Quite hypocritical of you.

*Unless they're being penises by picking you up at the terminal, driving to the opposite end of the airport and waiting at the FBO for a couple @Boris Badenov types to casually saunter out to the van when you're on a short layover.
No. Us "real" part 91 types don't bother with hotel vans. They bring our rental car plane-side after the pax leave. And if the don't? Heads. Will. Roll. Do they really expect me to roll my bag through the lobby to the parking lot? I'm no heathen!!! :)

Just went out to dinner with the Commander. We are at a "smallish" city so had to take the hotel van for dinner. We both tipped a dollar each way. Also, we both left 20% for the waitress.

Act like professionals. Tip.
