Twin Time!

4 out of 5 great lakes prefer Michigan.
My boss went and bought a nice older Apache to put a camera system into solely to allow us (his 6 or 7 pilots) the opportunity to build more twin time. We can use it to fly any of our routes, but the trade-off is no pay, which when I take into account our pay (light years better then a first year (or second year) regional FO), I'm not all that upset about, since we get to choose if we want to fly it or not. Personally I plan on staying in my nice & slow assigned Cherokee 160 for my 7 or 8 hour routes and will fly the twin on the thin routes as long as I've already flown enough in the single. I also plan on doing a lot more fun flying and will be able to use it as it's available and just pay fuel and operating costs. Finally looking at some decent twin time building (I already have 100 mutli PIC, but I'll take every bit I can get!)

What sort of witchcraft is this?

Seriously. What job do you have that works like this? Because the last I heard you were doing IT work. Clearly, this is not IT work.

What a creative way to keep pilots on payroll. I'm impressed!

And that is.....

Oh sorry, agricultural aerial survey. (themal imagery / etc)

The twin is there as an option. He's not forcing us to fly it. If I want to stay in the Cherokee 160 / 235 or Arrow, I'll keep making my $40/hr. It's only purpose is to allow a bunch of low time guys the option to build twin time.

Wait, so if you fly the twin you end up flying it for free and not making anything? Que?

Essentially, and I figured I'd get this response, at first I had the same reaction, but it's not going to be an "assigned" plane, as I said above, it's there if we want to fly it. I think it's kind of the best of both worlds to be honest. I have a full time salaried IT job, so it actually works out ok for me.

Seems like a good deal to me. I'd be pretty surprised if an Apache didn't cost more than $40/hour more than a Cherokee to operate. Think of it as the owner giving them the option of flying an Apache for LESS rather than for nothing, since they still earn in the singles.

What are people missing about the word "Optional?"

I think of it as perk to the job...
If you're flying it to do a job I think you should be getting paid for it. If he doesn't need a twin for the mission then I think it's just a dumb business decision, but that's me.

Giving your employees an option that may strategically help them should they choose it is bad business?

Think of it like this. The boss doesn't need a twin. It costs him more than $40 an hour to operate. He's not forcing any one to fly it. He's basically giving his employees an opportunity to rent a twin and fly it solo for $40 an hour. He's trying to help them in their careers. He could keep plugging away in the SE equipment and not give a crap about what his employees goals are. I'm sure he figures it's a win-win for him and the employees. If some one can find a twin that you can rent solo, wet for $40 dollars an hour I'd be shocked. This guys heart seems to be in the right place.

You guys with higher time and full time flying gigs seem to forget the joys of flying. For some people, it's hard to build time.

I have a full time law enforcement job. I "volunteer" for our aero squadron. No pay. Just flying. I have a commercial license though, so perhaps they should pay me.
