Trans States Airlines to get 36 airplanes

So the news is reporting TSA to get 36 EMB-135s. Supposedly from Express jet. Now there is a rumor floating around that TSA recruiting will hire Chautauqua captain qualified First Officers and start them off at 42/hour.

Considering a Republic FO tops off at 36/hour.....will that be enough to sway a topped out CHQ FO to jump ship? Is that 42/hour even real? What does the contract say and how can TSA circumnavigate that?

Holy crap guys, I'm guessing this isn't true, but reading isn't that hard, either!

Captain QUALIFIED FO's, as in FO's that already meet the captain upgrade requirements at Trans States and have a PIC type in the aircraft, which every CHQ FO will have by default.

And they're EMB-145's, not 135's.

And yes, XJT still has (or got rid of very recently) 135's.

First year captain pay at Trans States is $59.

This takes about 30 seconds of google-fu.

And to add to this, as of now, these are airplanes that are/scheduled to be parked at XJT. This is NOT "XJT flying" being stolen by TSA. Many people are up in arms over this and trying to throw TSA and their pilots under the bus. Fact is, it's United's flying and their flying only. They own the leases to the planes, and the agreements for XJT doing the flying are over for these tails. It's plain and simple.

It will be interesting to see whether this is straight growth for them, or replacement of current ER's. I am also interested to see which tails they pick. We are retiring mostly EP's (ER's converted), which are the "junk" planes at XJT, but still way better than anything TSA has. Hopefully for their sake they pick out mostly LR's.

$42/hr for a CA is a slap in the friggin' face. Just saying.

Negative. If you meet the requirements you start as FO paid at $42/hr until you upgrade(which won't be long)

This looks like the beginning of the end of low 1st year pay in the Regional industry. Simultaneously, it also looks like the beginning of the end of senior regional pilot groups.

Don't quote me, as I have not seen the details, only what I heard in rumors over the last couple days. What I think it is is they want to pay first officers to be ready to sit left seat as needed, until they can hold a captain spot. I have no idea whether this means you still make $42 an hour every time you fill the left seat, but if that's what it does mean- F that noise.

Kind of like what CommutAir has. The bottom 4 CAs are actually CQFs (Captain Qualified First officers.) They can sit in either seat.

I know over at Colgan they tried to do this when we were having issues staffing the Q400 and the union said "hell no."

From what the CQFs I've flown with have said, they don't like it. One guy finished IOE then flew for 3 weeks as an FO before being called off of reserve to sit left seat for a leg, and then back and forth in the seats.

SWA does something similar

I don't believe it is Captain seat fills on the line..it's just FO until you upgrade but calling it CA qualified or whatever because you have to meet certain mins to be considered for this.

I just confirmed this with a TSA HR person they are taking:

CHQ FO's with 3500TT with 1000 of that Pt.121/135
and 1'st year pay will start at $43.42/hr.

Union said hell no? There was no CBA at Colgan and never was. I didn't realize that a new union with nothing had that sort of bargaining power. That's kind of cool.

This is probably the most unsafe thing in that airlines. To have someone basically be qualified to do two jobs and not be in the training department is unsafe, we have two pilots for a reason. Could you imagine having to remember both sets of flows and duties from memory and be able to flip a switch mentally and do the job at the moments notice?

Just flip it, if it doesn't work (or works wrong) flip it back and try another one.

It'll take a while but you'll get there eventually.

Strange they are only offering this to CHQ FOs. Why not XJT or Eagle ERJ folks?

It probably is open to anyone who is ERJ qualified and meets those mins.. I think they were just targeting CHQ because they are being merged into Shuttle America and will probably be completely finished next year sometime.

They do that to new captains here at RAH, except you are paid the captain rate. We get guys upgrading and then basically sitting right seat in the Q. I can understand people having issues with this, but what really concerns me is the fact that the airlines don't have to give you full training to sit in the right seat. People who've never flown the plane before could be sitting right seat on day 1 as captain, and never have been evaluated doing it, just given the minimum amount of time in the sim.

Because XJT or Eagle guys with those times probably are not capped out at 36.62.
Trust me there are a ton of capped out Eagle FOs with 4K+ in the EMB. $42 isn't that much more than $37. Hell I have 3,100 hours in the thing and I have been off it for two years and I hate to work.
