I'm on the wagon too. The upper respiratory infection that was running rampant has invaded my sinuses and copious amounts of Vitamin M (motrin) and drinking are nog a good combination.

I watched an empty British Airways 777 ferry from BOS to JFK. It got off the ground faster then the Saab I was flying at the time.

Back when I lived on Yokota AFB I kept a scanner running in the house so I could hear when something cool was going in or out. One day I heard Atlas call for taxi. I grabbed my camera and hopped in the car. I drove to where I thought I could get a great shot of it rotating.

Here's what I got:

Was pretty impressive.

I've ferried the 767 around a number of times (pretty common in the ACMI world). You wouldn't believe how much extra thrust these things have without 100,000 lbs of freight or people bogging it down. It'll set you back in your seat on takeoff and peg out the VSI.

I flew a mostly empty 767-300 from DTW to JFK several years ago and all I remember is "V1 Ro--- HOLY CRAP!"

I don't know what's worse....Talking about ferrying empty airplanes or folks posting pictures on Facebook about watching a car race named Sebring?

Well, we had a lot of assets diverted to DTW during the storm that year.

But it was fun!

Flew an empty MD-90 from SAT to AUS once and a 757 from LYS to JFK with only the flight crew. The station manager even loaded us full of catered, non-airline food too. Mais oui!

Sea level, zero wind, no obstacles, no runway slope and standard day with 9,500' of runway will get you max structural for our engines on the -200ER. (10,200 for the LR) Don't know what weight with fuel load you would define as "empty" but I'm guessing you could probably get decent fuel amounts on board and be within W&B envelopes and only need about 6,000' of runway or so.
Close enough. I was wondering what difference it made how short the runway is for landing if you want to take off again and the runway's not long enough to do that.

USAirways Flight 1549? :)

But I have no clue if the 320-series has the "ditching" button and if it was even used.

Theoretically, the 330 will float for a period of time by closing appropriate outflow valves and ports, but I'm sure in hell not going to worry about the probability if I find myself in the unfortunate scenario of having to ditch.

The ditch switch wasn't engaged. However, the impact, as gentle as it was, still ripped a hole in the bottom of the plane.

Ditched planes will float... for a limited amount of time. If all the openings on it don't let in the water quick enough (think avionics vents, pack intakes, outflow valve, and so on), then the nearly inevitable damage from the ditching would rip open some more, larger holes.

I've had a dual pack failure before- Despite the outflow valve closing, the plane leaked out the air at a very apparent rate.

IAD to BWI for me!

Similar experience... Pretty sure we leveled off at 5000 feet about a half second after we rotated. "oh... gear up..."

(slight exaggeration...)
