Tipping

Glad this thread turned into a talk about coffee. I tell people the plane runs on gas, but the pilots run on coffee.

You are a really good person, so I guess there is something to be said about the karma involved about making enough to tip that much.

Appreciate the compliment but you probably read that wrong. That's how much I got, not gave. I received more than I have given, unfortunately.
 
I tip as much as I can afford. It used to be a minimum of 5$ for anything, even just a cup of coffee, having acquired all the ills of most adults (term used loosely) aka BILLS, I unfortunately can only tip like a rad mofo sometimes. Moral of the story, tipping is awesome.

I'm addicted to tipping. Unfortunately, I can't afford it now that I'm flying for a living.

So I'm very broke. Oops.

I'll tip the van driver $1 if they load/unload my bag. I don't think I've ever tipped an employee at Starbucks for pouring me a cup of coffee.
 
Two bucks for showing up, if I'm the C/A. If I'm the F/O, it's one. If something else awesome is shown (whether it be service or...destination), the wallet opens right back up. Where's @Seggy on this one? I think I remember him telling me that I was a selfish monster for not tipping enough last time this came up. I think that means most of you are in for the e-tongue-lashing of your lives, you cheap bastards!
 
If the driver is elderly then I'll usually tip regardless if they want to help with the bags or not, so my wallet does have some compassion. :)
 
I only tip employees classified as receiving a large portion of their earnings from tips and only then because they only make like $2.50/hr otherwise.

I was not going to post, because if I was going to, I would have said that it enrages me to hear folks say they won't tip the van driver because 'it is there job' or 'I put my own bags in and out of the van'. What bullcrap excuses. You are a professional, act like one.

Now that you asked though, there is my answer.

How is it unprofessional not to tip?

You can pay out the ass for Royal Purple motor oil, or you can change high quality regular oil at specified intervals; when both are going into a regular daily driver vehicle (not some race car or some far out example); and there won't be that much of a marked difference, certainly not worth the exhorbiant price difference.

Granted yes, we're talking the difference when it comes to coffee of only about $3 to $5, but that adds up eventually; unless money is no object.

Pilots want to be treated with respect, dignity, and professionalism. By doing the little things like tipping a guy loading your bag in the van it is treating someone else in a similar regard.

Also maybe he/she will make sure the front desk takes care of you when it comes to your room assignment, give you a coupon for a free appetizer at the restaurant, etc.

Sounds more like a bribe than a tip if you are expecting something additional in return for it.

Do you tip the chef and the restaurant owner, or just the waitstaff?

Just the waitstaff, of course.

I don't like that we are a tipping society but we are. Until we are like most of Asia with zero tipping, this is the system we use. Per diem is meant to cover incidental travel expenses like a whopping $2 round trip tip for a layover.

Eh. Customary set by who? I'll tip if they load and grab the bags. A little more in fact the other day when they were very heavy, it was cold and snowing. Also, the guy who grabbed my car as I was walking out the store and had it ready when I walked up to the booth. He got above the "standard" tip. But if the driver drives to and from the hotel, doesn't load/unload bags, or if the waiter doesn't refill drinks and only brings a check after taking an order, they didn't go above and beyond service.
