Landing Incident @ SFO

I just came from recurrent. We spend the first part of the day with our flight attendants, talking largely about evacuations (but also about how they manage the cabin, medical conditions and such). So this is timely:

"No doubt, get out."

This thread is a prime example of why I don't post here anymore. Party A has an opinion on something, whether right or worng, and Party B doesn't like said opinion, again whether right or wrong. Let said dogpile and poo flinging contest (read as "ego contest" or "log book" measuring contest) ensue.

Then, rather than locking the thread down, the moderation lets it continue until people are pissed off, and just come back to stir the pot at look for the other party and troll them. It's probably no fault of their own either. The first few pages of this thread were decent. But now, there is wat to much going on to be able to get to it all in this thread alone. I have been watching this thread go down hill between the normal parties that seem to be pitted against one another on a regular basis. Below is part of a PM from another member.

Personally, I think *** is an ass hole. He is very opinionated, and if your opinion is different than his, yours is wrong. I don't know **************. This place has become to much of a "good 'ole boy's" club. So, I **********, and shake my head at a lot of the posts. There are a few ******************* with worse. So, I just read and shake my head.

In short, what could be a decent discussion about what happened here at SFO, has been lost in a mess of poo flinging and ego's getting in the way, just like every other thread here now. It didn't used to be this way. If this were my website, I'd take it down. This was not Doug's intention when he started it. And personally, as much as I don't always agree with him, ATN would probably make a great mod. He strikes me as extreamly strict, and this place needs it right now.

Ya'll been acting like a bunch of GD children lately! I got smacked in another thread, and decided it was time to "look in the mirrior." I think there are more than a few here that need to be put on a time out to do the same. At least I had the sense to do it on my own.

Yeesh, this thread is a huge car wreck! Have a beer and ponder about what just happened. :)

This is why trucking is better. You just step between the trailers and settle stuff then go drink cheap beer and hit on toothless waitresses.

Why hit on the toothless waitress when the lot lizzard will come to you?

Unless, of course, you want to make the other drivers jealous by showing off what you managed to score.... :)

OK, let's do a thought experiment, JC. That's reasonably non-confrontational, isn't it?

So. There's no longer such a thing as a "screw up". Or if there is, then certainly, those who have been victimized by the System and have commited these "screw ups" aren't worthy of being sent to hit the bricks and peddle their wares elsewhere. No! They've been failed by The System! There are no losers, just winners-in-waiting! There are only actions that are taken by people who are insufficiently trained. Which, presumably, can be corrected by right-thinking new-age "non-judgmental" training programs. Oh, you forgot where the airspeed indicator was? Gosh, guess we failed you again! Here you go, we'll put neon in the instrument. Bad pilot, BAD! Don't do it again! Here, have a chewtoy. GOOD pilot.

Forget about the people who die in agony in the back (they're just pax, after all...numbers! This is a numbers game!), let's talk about pilots. If nothing is your fault, then nothing is your responsability either. You're just another redundant component which might malfunction from time to time (hey, everyone does!). I think it's high time that we recognize that we have all the free will, anima, and legitimacy of a broken sprocket. It's the new reality, and we'd best consign ourselves to it. Who's really flying this airplane? Uhm, not sure. The Safety Department? Dunno, NOT ME, anyway! I'm just here for the view and the free peanuts.

The like button wasn't good enough. I like this post.

I think that there's a happy middle ground that, for some reason in this thread gets ignored.

Certainly there can be systems that can be at fault...but there can also just be pilots who don't perform, too. I really don't understand why people are so polarized in one corner or the other -- we have to be willing to look at ALL the possible root causes, either systemic or in personal performance, if we care about excellence and safety.
