So you cannot apply from within? ..Whats up with that?...FedEx usually does a pretty good job as far as applying from within. For the most part an internal candidate is supposed to have an edge..Doesn't always happen but usually it does.

It has something to do with me being union or some bullcrap..I was suprised..I did think about quitting, but I need this job. I wouldve thought UPS would consider me since I already work for them and they have all my information already. I thought about making another account on their site and applying, but, dont want to be untrue. Like I said, Ill be looking at Fedex, then apply back to UPS is this position comes open again. Then maybe I can apply.

Although the HR guy said he was gonna check further into it, after I showed him my license. I would ask a UPS pilot, I see them all the time, but dunno how much help they could be.

I would assume not since they said I had to quit to apply. I guess its just open to only people outside of UPS. Although it makes me wonder..This is assistant dispatcher....I wonder if they will make you quit to apply to be a full dispatcher.....

This whole situation both amazes me and doesn't surprise me at the same time. Something tells me if you did go work for FedEx you'd be less than encouraged to come back UPS. At least you'd have a useful employee shipping discount there. Maybe there's some rule bout not being able to transfer from one union to another.. who knows. If you can get a job gaining experience somewhere that'd help you out more than being a current employee. Same is true at FedEx, they have a lot of internal applicants dispatch for some one by day and throw boxes at night. But at least there you get the first shot before they post the position externally.

I applied today... One can hope, right? :)

I just want to tell you good luck, we're all counting on you

That just seems really strange to me...

And to answer your previous question, this position will upgrade to a relief dispatcher line upon completion of training.

Is this to imply then that once training is over with the position upgrades to a full dispatch position on the relief line? Is the Assistant position at UPS like the one at Southwest, where the Assistant position is, in effect, and apprenticeship?

Yes and yes. Assistants are moved up to dispatcher slots in seniority order as lines open up. We currently have no assistants on staff and need to fill a relief line this year.
