New GI Bill and Flight Training

At least for you guys that were considering the ATP/MSU program... I think it's better than it happened now, rather than after investing a lot of effort and benefits into a useless degree.

Yep, real great considering that was our only chance of getting the VA to pay for flight training...

While I agree it sucks, I think this statement is a little sensationalistic. There are other options, with additional challenges is all.

Work with MSU, but look at what options you have that you can afford... If you want the flight training to happen, make it happen!

Totally see where you're coming from, and trust me, I've done the legwork, this was my only option, considering I have a family and can't just up and move. If that were the case, I'd probably be flying Blackhawks in the Army...

Now to clarify, MSU was doing this program online correct? Dude my take on this one is that, sooner or later MSU will meet the criteria they failed the meet, they will get their act together etc. Unless you are getting too old or something like me (35) just wait up and let things work out. In the meantime, I would stay in books, do that awesome job and spend quality time with the family! I am positive MSU is not going to settle with that media attention and not fix the situation. What is a university with accreditation?

Anyone use their benefits for the flight program at Pulaski Technical College in Little Rock, AR? Looks like I'm going to be headed there. They only have a 2-year program that goes up from Private - Instrument - Commerical. They said you can then transfer to Henderson State University in Arkdelphia, AR to do the CFI/II/MEI.

MSU is appealing the decision, but after talking to some folks with inside knowledge of the proceedings, it sounds as if this decision is more political that based on the issues they mentioned. The Government and HLC are not happy with the growth of private IHL's, and this is a way to send a message to all of them.

Please explain what you mean. As far as I know, the emphasis is on increased oversight of private for-profit universities which in my opinion, deserve all the scrutiny they get.

MSU is a non-profit college, but with a graduation percentage of 8% and a college president that was payed like it was the Ivy League, it seems likely to me that something fishy was going on there.

Interesting, do you have a link to that number? I didn't see that before.

That's a link to the HLC's findings. You find that number on the bottom of page 9.

This article mentions the president's pay.
As the Gazette has previously reported, Polk was one of the most highly compensated university presidents in the country in 2009, according to Mountain State University's Form 990 filed with the Internal Revenue Service. Polk's base salary for 2009 was $371,269.
He received more than $1.4 million in other pay and more than $4,000 in nontaxable benefits, according to the tax forms.
Polk's compensation eats up a sizable portion of MSU's overall budget -- about 3.5 percent, according a report by The Chronicle of Higher Education. Most colleges only spent about 0.4 percent of their budgets on their presidents.

At least he was fired, and I'm not defending MSU regarding those numbers, that's pretty solid. But, as self serving as it sounds, give them a chance (more then a year) to demonstrate improvement. 1 year in University terms is not nearly enough time to get good data on some of the items they outline.

Just curious if anyone is pulling off working full time (or still on active duty) and doing flight training via IHL? If so, can you elaborate on how you pulled it off? Just flying/classes on weekends? Does your IHL accommodate individual student's like that?

I work full time and was planning on flying on the weekends. My instructor at ATP was understanding and was going to schedule me for 2 events instead of one on each day.

Have you ruled out using the GI Bill at an FBO on the weekends? It will pay up to $10,000 per year for non-IHL flight training.

It needs to be Pt. 141 training, of which I've only found one program qualified for (American Flyers who seemed unwilling to do the administrative work required to get certified) and honestly, $10,000 a year is nothing when it comes to flight training.

Has anyone used Utah Valley University under the Post 9-11 GI Bill? I'm trying to look for safety nets.

I was going to if I had transferred to Utah Guard but didn't... I read about them on here and airline pilots forum and heard both ways that they are fully or partially covering costs so your best bet to call them....
