Friday marked the opening of the Boeing (BA) 787 Dreamliner Final Assembly building in North Charleston, South Carolina, despite the state's battle with the National Labor Relations Board about the company's decision to build in South Carolina.

"The NLRB wants the jobs here transferred back to Washington State and that's not going to happen," South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson told FOXbusiness.com. "Opening this facility is an exclamation point."

The $750 million facility, which finished construction six months ahead of schedule, features 642,720 square feet (roughly 10 football fields) of space and will produce three 787 Dreamliners per month.

Anybody else get the impression that 'exclamation point' is a euphemism in this case?

Good, its about time someone stood up for what is right. The Government needs to stay out of private enterprise
 
I absolutely back Boeing's ability to build their plant wherever they want.

At the same time, if this was a GoJet thread someone would be advocating violence. (figuratively of course)

Anybody but me see the dichotomy between the pro-union statements in other threads, and the pro-Boeing union-busting move to an anti-union state?

Just a sayin'.

Glad to see them spreading out again.. I have a good friend who's dad is an engineer for Boeing. He got transferred to HSV when the Oak Ridge reserach facility shut down, now he is in SC and loving it!

How is it union busting? Where does it say that Boeing has to hire union help?

Boeing is one of the few corporations in the US that has traditionally employed union engineers.

Being an engineer - honestly, I prefer not having a union. Being a pilot, my opinion would be different.

Engineers expect to make lots of lateral career moves - hard to do that with unions and seniority and all.

When that guy said, "Opening this facility is an exclamation point," what he was referring to was that everyone was surprised that it was completed ahead of schedule, unlike the airplane that is supposed to be assembled there, ya dig?

Nothing more to see here.

Dad works for Boeing... non-union....

some jobs are just meant to not have a union.... engineer would be one of them. I hope airline pilot is the last union job I have...

The irony here is that it is the unions that push for a seniority based system, thus it is the unions that make lateral career moves difficult.

Oh, and I agree that the NLRB is way oversteping its bounds here.

There is absolutely no reason Boeing shouldn't be able to open a plant anywhere they want in the US. There is no safety issue doing it, and there is no reason to stop them because of politics, which is all this is. A union-back president wanted his cronies to 'lean on them' a bit. It failed, move along.

Well, it's not all-or-nothing...

Do I support the right of people to voluntarily join unions and address workplace issues? Absolutely.
Do I support the right of unions to be so powerful that they can sway the government to send unionized jobs to another plant? Absolutely not.

It's documented and alleged by the union that Boeing executives said that the plant opening was partly retaliation for previous strikes. That makes it an illegal job action. You can not retaliate after the strike is over. The only "politics" this is about is the Republican politics bringing it up in the US Senate and Congress. It is a simple contract dispute -- you don't settle contract disputes in Congress, you settle them in court. Boeing for some reason doesn't like that idea.
