I have more than a couple hundred hours. I promise. And don't you think flying a Beech 1900 would be a step up from flight instructing? I think even someone with 10 hours would agree that its a step up. Or am I missing something here?
 
How dead set are you on going to an airline? I know a guy in similar circumstances as you that just got hired flying a Hawker down here in FL, he has a DUI on his record. He was something like 3000TT mostly instruction with some right seat LR and King Air time I think, making good money at this new gig.

But if your airline airline airline (which is okay) then I would take the Great Lakes job. Your really going to have to dot your I's and cross your T's but as time progresses with some good flight time and keeping your nose clean you will become more and more competitive for sure.

So remember, for every 1000 dollars you don't make now, you'll have to make 10,000 in a decade to catch up so be careful about sacrificing for to long.

I dont understand why pride or anything else negative about Lakes has to be made into such a big deal. The reason its so bad here is because of the 1000 TPIC mentality, people jumped ship once they got 1000 TPIC and management realized that, so thank your friends at the majors now who jumped ship years ago and started this whole problem.

I don't understand how anyone can bash the experience someone gets flying here as an F.O. Flight instructors dont fly in icing shooting hand flown NDB approaches down to the nuts, IT DOESNT HAPPEN. Flight instructors don't get the experience of a very challenging 121 training program. I have experienced more things here in training over the last 6 weeks than the last 6 months instructing, I am happy that theres some change. Who cares that some people fly this airplane single pilot, good for them, this is a 121 airline and a crew is an absolute necessity for the safety and service (or we try to serve atleast) and as a F.O. you will get a lot of experience.

Personally, how can anyone discredit or demean this experience? It really chaps my ass when people here are always starting crap because they think their opinions are of higher value than respect. Unless you work here, shut the hell up. I dont give two craps about your friend who hasn't upgraded at GLA in three years and neither should anyone else cause its all hearsay. JC is suppose to be a helpful and knowledgeable (meaning your personal intimate experience) so that other aviators can make decisions based on whats right for them. Throwing crap around isn't going to change a company, you don't like the way the industry is then I suggest you find a new career cause this may come as a newsflash to you but pilots everywhere in the U.S. get screwed one way or the other.

Best thing about Lakes is the pilots, management does suck, but the pilot group is really awesome.

That's your notion of respect? A dude with 179 posts explaining to everyone else (including Dough) what JC is "supposed to be about"? Explaining to others what they should or shouldn't be allowed to post lest it offend your delicate sensibilities? By the way, what's your theory of the crime here, that someone is just making up that their buddy hasn't upgraded for 3 years to make your totally rad food-stamp job look bad? Pilots in the US get screwed because of the attitude that getting screwed is inevitable.

Its not about delicate sensibilities, its about common sense. If I, as a pilot at GLA, tried to tell a group of people what I thought about being a pilot at XYZ airlines which you worked at, with no personal experience, you would probably tell me to shut the hell up or at least you would want to. I apologize if my lack of filtration for how I really feel offends your or anyone else's "delicate sensibilities".

You asked me about hearsay, well get a dictionary and look it up, then you will understand my theory.

Personal opinions about somewhere that you don't work and only get outside information on shouldn't be used as a hinderance to those who are trying to get facts. I tend to read and post irregularly, I have used JC to help my career decisions and share personal experiences. I could probably spend my life posting on here about things that I hear or people that I know like some, but I tend to keep my posts related to something that I have either personal knowledge or need the assistance of those much wiser than I to facilitate my knowledge.

Reality is that pilots, not all by any means, get screwed. Whether its contracts, pay, QOL, whatever it is. Its not like I think it shouldn't change, trust me, I know GLA is not the most desirable place among other places with different issues. The point I was trying to make is that everyone gets screwed, so why talk trash about one place or the other when everyone has a decision on how they "get screwed". I chose Lakes for the type of flying they do cause no autopilots and gps flying sounds more fun to me, and of course, the upgrade time. Thats my decision, as a husband and a father, and if I can make it work then there are others who can also. But I dont think its fair to scare them off from an opportunity playing the pride card or having folks who do not have intimate knowledge of the airline to stray them away. I am not trying to change what or how people think, just the perception of what they think and post with no knowledge has an effect on those who are new or really trying to make a decision which is right FOR THEM.

Seriously, we don't need that either. He took that shot at me and I disregarded it, I could have pulled the "length of membership", but its not worth it and its besides the point I was trying to make.
 
Question. Why are we still talking planes? Why are we still talking about GLA? Boobs and beer have been brought up a few times in this thread. Let's all go have a few beers while looking at boobs and GLA and the anonymous interwebz pilot talk won't be brought up.

I got beer but I am in North Platte, NE and the boobs are yet to be found so I kill time here talking about planes.

But good thought anyways, I would be down. Whose that chick in your avatar anyways?!
 
I don't know. She was doing that 20 years before I was born. I can still imagine her boobs though. My guess...KiloApha, Jhugz, or Waco's mom.

Anyway, props to Aviator_Bakeek for posting his experience with GLA. I used to jump on GLA all the time and the pilots there always seemed happy to be there. Sure, GLA might not be the best airline in the world, but it's a great way to gain some experience. Those guys fly in some pretty extreme conditions (they'll cancel if they see what I go through) and they seem like a good stick. Sure, the management may not be the best, pay not be the best, pilot bases may not be the best, but really, every pilot you talk to says something could be better about where they work.

As far as what people write about other operators, they can learn to shut up. I 100% agree with A_B when it comes to this. People aways write stuff they hear. I admit, I used to do this a couple years ago, but now since I work for an operator that gets a lot of negative press, I realize that it's not right to spread rumors or bad press unless you have actually had your name on the payroll.

You don't need a bunch of "JC Cred" to know what JC is about.

There are plenty of commercial sources of information about careers in aviation, however I saw a need for a source of information made by professional pilots for future pilots and others that are interested in a "behind the scenes" perspective.

Ughhhh... North Platte. I used to run that route until last month. Not much to do there except people watch at Wal-Mart. I know a former TransPac CFI in training at LBF right now. Say hi to her!
