GLA or Multi-Engine Piston

Well it looks like I have a decision to make. On one hand I've been offered a class date with great lakes, and on the other I've been offered the multi-engine instructor upgrade at my current employer.

My thinking is the MEI gig is the safer bet, financially. Its a 6 month or year long commitment. But if I go that road its another 3-4 years at least until some PIC turbine time.

If the hiring keeps going, sure we're going to live extremely lean over the next 2 years, but I'll be ready to apply to the majors then.

My other concern, since my DUI on here is no secret, is that this might be my only opportunity to get into the part 121 world for a while.

It basically comes down to play it safe, or take the riskier road...and I'm leaning towards the riskier road, but I'd appreciate peoples thoughts.

If great lakes is offering you a class with a DUI, why do you feel that other 121 operators wouldnt do the same?

First off I say instruct longer.

Second off I have friends who have been there something like over 3 years and have yet to upgrade so I wouldn't be banking on that statement.

Good luck with whatever you decide.

Well the ones that fly to Canada won't until I'm able to go to Canada again, and that will be over a year. Let's face it, because of the ridiculously low pay scale, Lakes can't afford to be as choosy as the others.

Do what ever you think works for you...If I were you I'd instruct. better pay and QOL. And if you take the GLA interview, stick with it this time...

I'd say Lakes is better for your career progression, as long as they don't go out of business....

If you can afford the pay, I think the airline job is better experience.

Perhaps I am too tired to read well today....but what would you be instructing in that would prepare you for the majors after two years in it? A king air?

edit...now i see the title says multi-engine piston...

Take the Lakes job if you can afford it!

He didn't mention anything about being major ready after two years on instructing. He was referring to GLA (TPIC if upgrade times are quick).

I accepted the GLA job offer. Currently an MEI, FWIW.

I would say Great Lakes as well, but only if you can financially tolerate it.

If you look at hiring an individual as a calculated risk as to whether or not you will be worth the company's investment, I think it would make you that much more of an appealing candidate in the future for other companys when they make that same decision if you went to Great Lakes and did well there.

By the way, congratulation on the getting the job.

congrats on getting the offer. The time you spend getting multi-turbine will be worth gold rather than the multi-piston. I agree, if you can tolerate it and afford it, you will move farther faster with multi-turbine. I know that this is not always the case, but more than likely, any job you could get with multi-piston, you'll get as well with multi-turbine.

I'd go to McDonald's as a PT assistant manager, because at least then, I could pay my bills.

First - the OP has been really open about his difficulties, has been open and created a PSA about drunken driving, and even withstood the beating he took when he was flopping around about PW - so I admire that.

My question is this - he has a DUI and is apparently having trouble getting an airline gig. Does GLA make sense in terms of showing he can handle 121 training, handle working a 121 job, and then allow him to move to a better regional if he wanted to? I'm thinking here that GLA could potentially serve as the Land of Misfit Toys if you will and serve him that way due to the DUI.

I am not sure if the reason I am not getting any calls is the lack of multi or the DUI. But I am thinking the same, that any question of whether or not I can handle the 121 world would be put to rest after some time with GLA. Single I wouldn't have any second thoughts, I can take the beating until I become Captain. It'll be tough on my family till the upgrade. I'm just trying to gauge if the short term sacrifice will make me more marketable in the future. That can be hard seeing as how the industry can turn in any direction at a moments notice. Worse case scenario GLA goes out of business and I have a bunch of SIC turbine time and I just get a job at my base (I'm a jet mechanic in the guard).
