This is the question I have. In the 70's and 80's you had Germans and other "white" foreign nationals that would commit terrorism (Bader Meinhoff Gang) and even do it for the Palestinian issue. Most of these weren't suicide terrorist attacks. And, they were politically driven and economically driven (guns for hire) as opposed to religously driven terrorists. Do you think that AQ could in fact recruit non-muslims? I know there have been isolated American's that fought with AQ, but generally it's been rare. You would theoritically have to recruit someone that was not born muslim, turn them into a radicalized muslim, and then convince them to commit suicide for their newly adopted religion. I don't question whether AQ WOULD do it (they have strapped bombs to retarded kids and sent them into a crowd and blown them up) - I question whether they COULD do it. The degree of difficulty would be much higher I think.

But seriously, I'm glad you both care about our liberties as much as I do. Politics aside, enough brave men and women have fought and died for them, our job is simply to not give them away.
In much of the world, this friendly discourse about government powers would not even be possible.
and Jtrain, if you fly some taildraggers, Waco may listen more closely to your ACLU craziness

Really not a relevant question in this debate. There are plenty of issues in the 4th, 9th and 10th amendments that will be worked out in the courts. Hopefully the new congress, muzzles or abolishes the TSA in their present form.

When Jtrain and Waco agree, it just proves what is happening here, Americans are getting fed up and this time the indignaty of our 4th amendment rights being trounced on by the TSA, is crossing party lines. Regardless of political beliefs, I think Americans have had it....and that can be a good thing. By the way think about this:

Doug, these guys are going to hit your bottom line and it will effect you directly. Now you can say oh they are just doing their jobs, people need to stop complaining, etc. They're not going to though. What they are going to do is hop in a mini-van and put their money in the gas tank and aviation will become even worse than it is. These guys, the TSA, will be your demise and the best you can muster is a weak "meh"? I don't get it. I am seriously confused at this response. You want them to be rational? That in itself is irrational.
This is what concerns me. Where will the line get drawn? Because it will eventually happen, it's just a matter of time. I feel that when you fly, you are taking a risk that; A) The airplane won't have a catistrophic failure and come down, and B) that some Jihadist won't stuff a bomb up his ass and bring the plane down.
Drug mules have already been bringing things over in ballons having swallowed them. I think it was on "Dr. G Medical Examiner" where she was investigating the death of an older man in a hotel room who OD'ed on cocaine when a baloon burst in his stomach. I would be possible to perform surgery and implant an IED into somones internals. Give them enough pain meds and deliver them to the airport. The new scanners won't be able to pick that stuff up. So again, where do you draw the line. Will we next be asked to have a full on x-ray to see if we have anything stuffed up inside us to get on a plane. I understand that we are trying to keep us all safe, but at what cost? Flying is a calculated risk even if it weren't for a single terrorists in the world. Accept the risk, or choose not to fly IMHO.

There's a real simple, low tech solution to this entire problem.
Dogs.
Train zillions of dogs to sniff EVERYTHING that comes into an airport. Rampers, passengers, pilots, luggage, caro everyone and everything that comes into the secure area, every day.
Nobody is going to have a problem with this. Not only are the dogs doing an incredibly valuable public service by protecting our natural security, they're cute and furry. Cute and furry things have never done anything bad or harmful before (http://en.last-video.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/bear-attack.jpg), and I think the American public would accept this without question.

I am actually! I'm horribly allergic to dogs, so much so that I have problems breathing around dogs. I'm probably one of the worst examples of what a dog allergy can be.
That being said, I have no problems with being around dogs for short periods of time. Do I walk up to them and rub my eyes on their fur? Of course not, but I've got no problems with being around them for a while.

I think it's a good idea as well. Especially since they're cute and furry. Really, what would be wrong with a metal detector and a quick dog sniff? I'd be happier to do that than get cancer and have nude pics taken, or be groped....
